Bereavement Special Leave, Urgent Clarification Requested

Post by Guevarista »

Unfortunately, there have been a number of close family bereavements to members in our delivery office over the past couple of weeks. DOM's been less than helpful, but I've managed to get Cat A (paid) leave agreed for most of the guys. There's one glaring exception: One of our posties lost an aunt (blood relative). He was told that he could take neither paid, unpaid nor annual leave, and that any hours taken off for the funeral ceremony would have to be worked back.

I've downloaded both

http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... hp?id=2528" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

and

http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... hp?id=3460" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

one of which specifically mentions aunts, whilst the other doesn't. Could some of you out there in deliveries please share your experiences of similar situations (I specifically mention 'deliveries' because the comprehensive document posted by TBT seems to be a POL (counters) document rather than an RM (deliveries) one - different protocols may or may not apply). Many thanks, all.

It could possibly be at the discretion of the manager,who is seriously low to not even allow a day off without pay...

Get the low life to get the policy off the intranet.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Thanks Michael & Postman for your replies. Once again, RMChat comes up with the moral and technical support that we all need when dealing with these snake oil salesmen! Cheers! :Applause

Sadly my father passed away this morning, my partner rang my manager (as i was in a state) to tell him what had happened and that I wouldn't be in work tomorrow. My manager unfortunately is not at all approachable and not at all understanding. All my partner got back was 'ok thanks' , not a 'I'm sorry to hear that' or 'send her my condolances' or 'how is she' , nothing! I have to go down south tomorrow to start arranging things, then I need to contact my manager but I'm not sure what to do. I'm not sure if I'm entitled to a certain amount of the off to deal with things. Do I just say that I won't be in for the rest of the week or do I have to call him every day to say that I need more time?

If you are taking care of the arrangements you are entitled to up to one week special leave with pay.
When you call your manager,just tell him you won't be in for the rest of the week.
If there are any problems just put the phone down,you have an obligation to inform them not an obligation to justify your position to a manager at such a difficult time.
Take care.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Thanks for your reply fish tank. I received a text from my manager at 5pm yesterday as I was driving back from my dads after a stressful day of trying to sort out his affairs. The text just said ' can I have some idea if you are In tomorrow please' My partner replied as I was driving and just said that it was my partner replying because I was driving and that I wouldn't be in for the rest of the week a there will be a lot of arranging to do following the death of my father, and would he like his condolences passed on to me. .........well I guess not as no reply came at all! Isn't it lovely to have such caring managers??
