the mails dropping off....the end of my fitting

every one keeps saying the mail volumes dropping off but i seem to have just as much if not more mail now than years ago,im on about the mail not packets ,i can see they have increased alright,are these figures floating around a load of tosh or is it me ??

In my experience the amount of machinable letters has dropped massively, especially for firms. Our firms jobs have gone from being ther heaviest walks in the office to the lightest and this is only over about the last three years or so.

Yep, stamped mail down, no doubts, but sufficiently absorbed by the amount of advertising blurb, flats, 1 sheet, you name it. Also the number of walks have reduced considerably, so each person has had to absorb mail from these rounds.

Stamped mail is well down on 5 years ago but has simply been replaced by DSA so the weight on your back has prob increased. Packets are up around 300% i recon.

The drop in mail volumes is probably counter balanced by a cut in delivery office hours to match. So on the face of it ,each walk has no noticeable drop in workload but has to walk further instead

Yes a slight drop in mail , but remember most prob there was 60 posties delivering mail in your office now there is only 50, +packets have doubled hence it always seems heavy

... so instead of 10 A6 stamped letters ... we now have 6 Saga Magazines ... let's work out the true definition of "volumes" ... interesting to note in today's "Courier Newsflash" A4 sheet that they used the phrase "traditional letters we handle is down 9%" ... with no mention of the 'other stuff'

There's "bullsh*t" ... and there's "complete and utter bullsh*t" ... and don't get me on the packets ....

it defo bloody feels alot heavier than it used to oh well xmas on the way ,had to to stay on sortin for ages today cause bloody managers are always stealing are floats an reserves an sorters ,,had the joy of tellin them the longer im in the office the less i do outside

I think when they say that mail is down.. They are correct ; in that the letters are down. Now we could argue what is mail? is. To me it is what we deliver ; whether it be a letter calls. or a packet.

The packet increase greatly changes the walk time ; as you have many more attendance calls. My example of today that whilst the mail was heavy the packets were awful... and they extended my delivery by a margin (plus I also cut)

Plus ; and this to me is important. If you look back over the years when the rounds where smaller and you were dilevring X amount of letters to Y amount of houses. Since then you are now dilivering to a larger round (by another margin) . You are now delivering X amount of letters to Y + Z amount of houses.

Even if you look at RM official stuff ; and am sure have seen it somewhere (maybe here) even Moya recognises that Posties are delivering more ... it's just that the rounds are larger.

Had to laugh today our Combi van today was crammed so much with parcels and bags we took a photo of it and struggled to shut the doors, we even had to have 2 bags in the front .
By the end of our P/L round which was 2 hours extended for driver and walker we had 60 docketed items to go back to the office in 3 sacks.
We didnt start our round till 10.40 am as we dont come in early unpaid but by the time we finished at 4pm the managers had fooked off and shut the DO at 2pm.
When I rung him on his mobile he wasnt best pleased as he was at home and I told him we had specials in our van . He said " leave them in the van in the carpark and put the keys through the letterbox"
Thing is tomorrow is our day off and there is specials left in our van .

Someone pointed out here that even if there is a collapse in mail volumes across the network, when seen from the perspective of individual walks the fall in volume might translate to a few less letters at most.

It's all RM BS. They only count STAMPED mail and not the massive increase in DSA and other crap. I know the story as I've worked for RM since the mid 90's.
If the mail has dropped off so much, how come my round was BIGGER when I first started to the size it is now?
Don't even mention the packets!
