Recorded's in post boxes

A customer asked me yesterday if a letter/packet, stamped with the right amount and with the orange signed for barcode sticker on will be processed if it is put straight into a post box or does it need to go over the post office counter ?

I felt a bit daft for not knowing the answer to be honest, but I said I would find out from some guys/gals that would know.

yes of course it will be processed, but not priority like 1st class ppi or specials

Where can I post a Recorded Signed For™ item?

From any Post Office® branch in the UK, or you can have your mail collected from your work place using our Business Collection service
Please don't put Recorded items straight into a Post box. This invalidates the service as you won't be able to get a receipt as proof of posting.

I suppose if you're not too bothered about proof of posting the item will just be processed as normal and if you still get a signature it's job done but if it goes missing...you're screwed.
If that's the case though...why bother with RD?

I suppose if you think the recipient denying receiving the item is much more likely than it getting lost or stolen in transit then you may post it in a postbox. Its still a silly thing to do though. Its not really that hard to take it to a Post Office or DO and get proof of posting.

But Recorded Signed For is for the benefit of the sender not the recipient, and if the sender's just put it in a post box and so hasn't got proof of posting then they're wasting the extra 95p.

Won't a signature still be obtained upon delivery? If the sender wants proof of delivery then they'll still get it, even if they don't have proof of postage.

Yes - but they won't be able to claim non signature or loss if these occur. Or if it is signed but the receiver denies its their signature, again no claim.

The item will still get processed in the same way as going through a post office .. however I am unsure if they will be able to.check the item has been delivered online ... I would guess that it would and if they have kept a copy of the barcode number then they should be able to trace the item once it has been delivered! .. let us know if the customer can do this ?? They won't be able to claim for any loss or damage as they don't have COP

I sent a packet to my mum and checked the barcode on line and it is all there with the proof of sig. Obviously I dont know what would happen if it went missing, I assume I wouldn't have a leg to stand on.

it is if you dont have a car loads of post offices have closed down over the last 9 years

Thats what I understand it to be. If you put a recorded into the system via a Post Box then you will get the same service all the way through as long as nothing goes wrong. But if anything does go wrong and you try to claim then it will be rejected.

ive done it when i needed to check it got there but it wasnt valuable anyway whats 42 quid anyway these days or its something rm wont replace

I've done a few collections myself and found a fair few recordeds myself just posted in the boxes. I guess yeh it will still work, but if you want to claim any sort of compo you would have to have the receipt of postage, so you are a bit stuffed if it goes missing.

I post about 20 a week straight into a Post Box. As others have said if you only want proof it was delivered that's fine. The things I send are only documents so have no value as such, I just need to know they were received. The only snag is there are a few which are delivered but get trapped in a bundle and not signed for when delivered. Of course with no proof of postage there is nothing I can do - but frankly waiting for the post office to scan 20 barcodes and then write the postcode and house number manually on the receipt - means I go without and live with it!
