7 AM start: where do we stand.

Managment and union are pushing us for a 7am start even though around 70% dont want it , they are hoping to kick it in by xmas, do we have to accept it or have we got grounds to fight it,thanks for reading this .

Agreement says no later than 7am start for "the majority". We now start at 07.30 everyday apart from Tuesday (08.00), management do whatever they want, and show complete disregard for the agreement.

This needs to be voted on before the union agrees anything. If it goes through there is no point been in a union because RM has the final say in everything as far as I can see. I have two children to pick up at 3 pm and I am pushing it to reach the school at 3pm on a 2 30 finish.

Start times are negotiatable issues , Steve Cameron who negotiated the delivery section of the Business Transformation agreement has even said it in writing. Of course it will depend on what work is available at the time you want to start but no one needs to have a 0700 start time.

However a rep can say he wants to stop later starts but his voice is not heard if the members in the unit don't back him up.

We had this issue last year when P&L came in, nobody wanted 7am starts we were told it was either that or even later starts. We wasn't given much option regarding the matter. It was raised that a lot of posties need to be finished at 3pm due to child care issues and in doing this they wouldn't be able to work past their time....ignored of course been stuck at 7am ever since, n posties cutting of all the time where as before you didn't mind working up to an hour over your time now you can't. (p.s. good luck fighting it)

after the revision I'm 34hrs, (was 30hrs) start times vary between 7-20 and 8-30, depending on day off, 39 hrs are -1hr
finish times vary from 2-40 to 3-20,
when this came about, i put in a government form about the change of hours (i have childcare issues some days of the week)
never heard a thing back!
also might as well talk to an onion than the union, apart from 1 been a lot cheaper and more useful, both stink and make you want to cry!

ask management why the need to change your start times if no decent reasons get your union rep to put in a 1st stage dissagreement this should then get your area rep to your office to have a meeting with his members (a union meeting is very rare nowdays).explain why the staff dont want latter times and make sure the whole office get involved.
if management and union are not intrested do what many offices do and dont listern to them.

sorry must be careful what i say but since many offices have had there revision steamrolled in we have had no meetings
with management they know how bad the feelings are amongest staff.as for union meetings they dont exsist anymore as
they know to put staff in one room would end in a mass fight.

remember if you area rep is not intrested in your cause he wont be getting your office vote.

Your start time should be dictated by your second wave arrival.
So you can hold out against the imposition of a 7am start but what do you do when they start f***ing with the arrival of your mail?
What if it leaves an hour spare in your day that they want to fill with lapsing?

We were told it was to do with Network drivers.

If we don't actually understand why they are doing what they are doing, how do we plan to campaign against it.
It's a bit like pissing in the dark.
For a full-timer on a 39hr week, a 7am start means a 14.28 finish assuming a 20/20 split break.
For most people in our office that didn't present after school problems.

But it does mean flat 7hr 48 days. No longs and shorts.
Which begins to limit the attendance patterns available. Is that the real aim?

I work in an office where it is 6.30 start and we have had the full revision. There are no plans to change to 7.00.
The only reason I could see for changing the start time would be if your mail arrival times were being changed.
If your rep is agreeing to this I would contact area rep or branch as I am pretty sure this would not be agreed unless it was for operational reasons.
