Casual staff pay

Post by buckrogers »

What are people's thoughts on casual staff being paid between £10-£15 ph once they have been with Angard for a period of 12 weeks?

I doubt Angard will ever pay that much money to a temp - they will have to charge RM about £18-20 to make much money from such an arrangement.

It is just too high even if the temp had worked for 2 years...

and if Angard/Royal Mail are ignoring it or using loopholes to side step it then the CWU should be doing something about it.
What is AWR?
The Agency Workers Regulations (AWR) was implemented in the UK on 1st October 2011. The purpose of the regulations is to provide temporary workers with equal treatment in terms of basic working and employment conditions as if they had been employed directly to do the same job. The rights will apply after a 12 week qualifying period.

Following the 12 week qualifying period the temporary workers will be entitled to equal treatment, including; pay, working hours, overtime, breaks, holidays and access to training and collective facilities. Equal treatment does not apply to sick pay or paternity/maternity leave.

They're underpaid, just like the rest of the hard-working staff at RM. Getting away from the slightly higher pay rate though, £10.25 per hour, you have to remember Angard casual staff have little to no job security, no bonuses, no guarantee they will work similar hours each week or just be left waiting on stand-by, no seniority and an overtime rate which isn't worth worthwhile.

The guy or gal next to me doing the same type of work as me should be paid the same hourly rate as me end of!

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Am I missing something here? Delivery staff do not get paid even £10 per hour so how can a casual staff be paid more than the regular staff.

If the casuals are being paid that much then good for them; I dont begrudge them because of the insecurities and so on. But Royal Mail will be wasting money because like I said, if RM is paying £15 to the staff then they will have to pay a premium on top to the Agency.

After the Angard fiasco last year, I thought RM were supposed to be doing the casual recruitment themselves this year.

Anyway, I think the poster might be a bit negative about the payment. From experience, i know some permanent staff think lowly of casuals and question their pay...

I don't begrudge them at all. I was a casual for just over 2 years and took a 25 hour contract just after the changes were made to Angard pay. I really wish I had stayed on as a casual.

In other industries in which I've worked the unions have negotiated the incorporation of bonuses into workers' salaries. The reasons cited were along the lines of simplification and boosting employers' pension contributions. It's now easier in those industries to make the comparison for agency staff rates. Making an equivalent for casual staff within RM is more complicated it seems. Agency staff have enough trouble getting paid the correct number of hours worked, holidays accrued at different rates and so on so not much chance of accurately calculating a rate of bonus the agency should pay to create the same hourly rate overall.

As someone who has experience of both agency and RM I find questioning casual staff pay rates unneccesary, divisive and distracting from more important issues. There's no question imo that RM is the least worse employer. I prefer a 20/25 hr week RM contract every time but accept the workload of the business requires casual staff too. Maybe they should get paid the £15 an hour mentioned for all the aggro

Yes the basic wage is around £9.00 per hour but then you need to add the different supplements and shift allowances which would easily take it into the £10 - £11 range - also I think the initial figures given by the OP are a guesstimate rather than accurate figures.

The figures I gave were from experience with Angard. Each week would be different amounts for example in one week 8 hours @9.86 3 hours @11.65 5 hours @ 14.47 etc

Apologies, buckrogers. Surely you don't want to remain a casual as opposed to protection of a contract employee.

I worked with Angard last year and the maximum we got was about £9.00 and that was after overtime (anything beyond 39 hours). And I am talking night shift here. The folks that worked just saturdays and sundays probably earned a bit more but they worked every weekend and they do about 11 hours or so a day -no envy!

The pay rate, btw, for MC and MDEC was max of £7.54 last year for nights and day time rate was about £6.05.

Well, the only supplement that is different for casuals is the holiday pay which is on top of the normal wages. It is about 3 - 5%, I think.
