How does seniority work?

I'm pretty new to Royal Mail and hear a lot of people talking about a repick coming up at the end of the year and that seniority is used for this repick.
I've come in with my own trolley round but does the "seniority repick" mean I will be left with whatever round is left at the end?
Shouldn't each round be judged on ability? Say round A needs someone who's fit because there's lots of flats, round B needs a fast walker with a driver who has local knowledge.

Senority doens't exist any longer in rm.

No,if you're just in the door you'll most likely be left with no round at all and have to borrow other people's when they are off...we call it a reserve.

Great idea.
A couple of flaws...it's bollocks and to be honest that's being kind.
I like the idea of giving the toughest duties to the fittest it's just that i don't think they would agree...and why would any duty need a fast walker?...unless it's a dodgy area and you want to get out sharpish.

If round A needs someone who is physically fit, it won't be picked by anyone near the top of the seniority list, as this will be occupied by that dying breed - the miserable old git full-timer.
Natural selection will dictate that round A will either fall to someone who is physically fit or someone who wants it to avoid being a floater or a reserve. Better the devil you know and all that.........

The flip side of giving hard duties to fit people is having to give an easy duty to someone who chooses to smoke 40 a day, never eats their 5 portions of fruit/veg a day and gets bladdered 3 times/week.

I wonder if they do it on hours, where someone on 25 hours can be fit into a 25 hour job but someone more senior on say 35 hours can't fit into it? I'm not sure?

my union rep said seniority is there to stop suitability which is open to corruption from the managment! im 10 years in service and getting messed about with my job and my holidays, seniority is not practiced anymore they say officially but its all whatever suites the managers and the people in the selctive club!!

Seniority for resigns is still there but if it invoves allowances then MTSF 2 comes into the equation. For annual leave seniority is in many places not the deciding factor. There are numerous ways to sign for annual leave.
