handing back lost/left keys

We had an instance yesterday where a member of public brought back a set of keys that were left in a post box (i know!!). The dom thanked said member of public and it was left at that. But then our senior man pipes up that the member of public should of got a fiver for bringing back the keys, he said that happened in the old days. i wonder if neone can shed ne more light on this lol.

That was a VERY long time ago ! There used to be a fob on the bunch of keys with contact details for the local office, or the plod. The same details used to be on the back of your ID badge too, both offering a reward for their safe return.

Think some of our bunches of keys still have the burgundy coloured fobs on them.

I remember them, I think ours were thick brass stamped with "Reward - ring xxxxxx"

Its the easiest thing in the world to do and anyone who has done collections for reasonable length of time would of done it. Also ive left a PDA on top of the box at least twice. You have too many things to carry now if have no coat on. Ive found the times ive left the keys in the box happens when you get distracted by a customer wanting to give you a letter just as your finnishing emptying the box or asking when the last collection is.

Everyone thinks how can you leave a key in a box it happens because youve been distracted, same as customers think you should never miss deliver letters ever .... It happens

I always try and say to myself now as im in the van "KP" which means keys and PDA and can i also add it is a horrible feeling when you have realised you havent got the keys and racing back to the last box hoping they are still there

perhaps they should restore the reward and make it £50 as an incentive for the public to return them.
