If your van breaks down and you dont want overtime?

Ok this happened in my office today. Van broke down and RAC finally came out to fix it. Once your van is fixed or towed a way and have a replacement, you are now way behind with your delivery. When you left the office in the morning you didnt need to tell your manager you wouldnt be able to complete but now that your van has broken down and has taken 2-3 hours to repair, you now won't be able to complete. Can you come back at your time with the undelivered mail and refuse to do the rest? I personally refuse to do overtime. What happens in this instance?

Yeah that's fine bring it back they probably ask you to take it back out again on Monday morning they should have really asked you in the morning wether you would be completing or not

I suppose management would have been aware that the van had broke down... So, you could have told them there and then that you will not be able to complete during your hours - hence, mail will be brought back and/or arrangement/assistance made to help you complete.

I dont think it will amount to much if you take such a stand especially on a saturday

The OPG has no problems. His van broke down.

What does Saturday have to do with anything?

There is less flexibility on Saturday - that is just the way it is. People that might be able to help will be thin on the ground, our office will be shut around 2 and most folks start earlier and like to get home for footy, family and well deserved rest.

If you are referring to cutting off then you should be aware that cutting off is not so 'clear cut' as some here tend to spout off - just cut off, just work your time. If it is that easy then people like this poster will not even post such a thread - my van broke down and it took 3 hours to fix...

If you go to the Union section, you might see a few post about people getting into all sorts of fix with cutting off (I suppose it is not just one cutting off but an attitude about cutting off and come backs from other misdemeanour).

We actually a similar yesterday (friday) and the bloke (one of them is a regular 'finish in my time' guy decided to stick it out... he finished about 1 hour over his time.

The cutting off procedure itself is pretty simple to follow and if followed properly should not cause members any problems.
The problems usually come from getting into confrontation situations with management,not getting your rep involved and sometimes a failure to understand that working to your time actually means working to your time,not trying to score a sneaky 10-20 minutes.
