Since the p&l revision I picked a singleton van duty which is a council estate with 700 calls, this is a part time duty of 35 hours, initially march on wards the job was manageable doing it the way the previous holder did it, ie carrying the mail on your shoulder but doing lots and lots of small loops, well the mail has got heavier and we are now being forced to complete all d2d's regardless whether any mail is to be delivered to that address - we didn't previously and went where live mail was. This means that its obviously heavier to carry etc, Several months ago i was struggling to prep the complete round and in agreement with the dom i was given an hr overtime on weds/thu/fri to start earlier as the round gets a lot of packets and mail etc.
This agreed overtime was then dropped and they now get someone to partially prep my walk before i arrive at 7.50, this is nowhere near the stage of prep i would have been with the overtime, acting managers have also accused me of not doing my d2d's and basically called me a liar and also put small bits of card inbetween the d2d to try and catch me out. In the last 2 weeks I now do the duty 100% as it is designed, it initially was a shared van but the pairing could never complete in time so it was split, in doing it with the trolley, I find it hard to complete and have cut off with notice several times. I get nagged every time i mention that i cant complete and they do say they will get the walk tested but are mainly saying that i should not use the trolley and their conjure up a way of doing the walk carrying less than 5kg each loop, I have 2 floaters which cover my duty and the one uses the trolley and cant complete the same as me, and the other does it the old way and completes but is in an hour earlier and often leaves d2d's incomplete. Today the wannabe acting managers decided that I might struggle as I had prepped too many d2d's and it took 2 of them to have a look and check it over, ironically these are the same so called managers who have previously accused me of not doing them, and infact i had prepped 10 more d2d's than needed lol.
anyhow essay almost over,
can they try to jiggle the round away from the properly designed plan of the walk to avoid me using the trolley and doing the job correctly?
Im going to speak to the union rep tomorrow as i have had enough of the nagging and cynical comments from the wannabe managers.

It sounds like your doing the correct thing. The guy coming in an hour early (unpaid ?) is not doing you any favours though.
As you suggested i would go the the rep and ask for the round to be tested as a park a loop and see what the outcome is. Mind you good luck as managers hate walk testing

Re: Managers trying to adjust duty so its not p&l
Is there some criteria for particular duties under P&L to be designed as solo walks? I know rural deliveries are excluded, but is it just whatever management decides gets the job done? There's a handful of solo duties in my office that were created from parts of neighbouring walks - naturally they were the most sought-after in the re-signing.

I deliver to a council est and cant use the trolly as it would last approx 4 mins before the locals came out of the woodwork and had it away.tragictramp wrote: In the last 2 weeks I now do the duty 100% as it is designed,![]()

it initially was a shared van but the pairing could never complete in time so it was split, in doing it with the trolley, I find it hard to complete and have cut off with notice several times. Not your problem
I get nagged every time i mention that i cant completeNot your problem
and they do say they will get the walk testedGood! If it cant be done it cant be done .
Start at your start time and finish at your finish time. Walk a sustainable pace accross the whole of the walk, they have no come back on you if you do that. And most important.... dont take on other peoples(managers) problems.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: Managers trying to adjust duty so its not p&l
Had the walk tested Friday, well I say tested but it was just a fellow Postie who's a work coach or whatever they call them, duty took 4hrs 20 as I do the job (properly), Friday was extremely light as we're usually hammered.
The official time is 3hrs45 but apparently unloading/loading trolleys moving van isn't added to this, also my union rep is on holiday so with the acting managers doing my head in I spoke to the Dom, told him the duty was impossible done correctly that the job was 45mins too long and I was fed up with being harassed by his actors, he blurted out lots of facts and figures but basically told me that 75% of the year we are understaffed due to the way it's all designed and that its expected that staff will go over their time, he wouldn't accept 45 mins to be a reasonable time the walk would be over by, he said it will be tested as I have been asking for weeks and am obviously being dishelieved, which was fine by me. Within 2 days the walk was tested.
It's been my long weekend so ill see tue/weds if they can conjure up some excuses, the only discrepancy I can see is I took 10 mins break before I went out and 10 on delivery as my initial 20 and 20 at end, the 20 at end is agreed but the initial 20 is supposed to be 30 mins after I start which is pathetic.

Same here, but if they've designed things that way then do it that way. A colleague loaded his van with trays rather than bags when his duty was tested and management used that as an excuse for why his walk was taking too long.tragictramp wrote:but the initial 20 is supposed to be 30 mins after I start which is pathetic.

Re: Managers trying to adjust duty so its not p&l
Was called into the office by a wannabe manager today to discuss the findings of the walk test, apparently their figures show i should complete the walk in 4hrs 30 on average per day, i done it in 4hrs20 but it was rather light on the test day, so their pointing that the problem is the indoor part of the duty, which they may look at, I basically need to leave the office 9.15am give or take 5 or ten mins to have a chance of completing, tuesdays being extremely light came up in the conversation and I was told they may reduce the hours on a tuesday and increase them on weds/thu/fri to compensate. Can they create a different work pattern just for me and my walk to fix the issues on weds/thu/fri, can they adjust my 35 hrs so i am on a different schedule to every other 35hr contract worker in the office?, I did say that they would have to do this as a whole office and not me specifically and he said not necessarily, but everyone else finishes earlier than me on a tuesday also, so why should i be singled out? 3 oclock is our latest finish time of which we take half our break to finishe earlier, i do not wish to work past 3 oclock full stop.
