If your Van breaks down (runs out of fuel)

I was thinking this today as I was driving around with little fuel in the van. What happens if you break down after the managers leave? I normally take cut offs after my duty so I'm normally out til about 5 (Even on a saturday!). has anyone had this happen to them? what do you do (apart from check you have enough fuel at the start of your duty)

You have answered your own question mate check the fuel before you go out.

I know in my office the walk holders has been causing havoc by taking their day off and leaving the vans empty (No fuel) where they expect the floater to fill it, one floater had to fill three vans in succession which that I don't agree with, plus the walk holders are leaving the vans in a tip, chip papers, sandwich wrappers and empty bottles in them and the managers are not checking the vans but checking tracked and packets instead.

If you run out of fuel you will absolutely no defence. You make your checks before you leave the office.

You would probably be up on a disciplinary and TBH it would be your own fault

Yeah I was just wondering about the fuel situation. I always check before. I knew I had enough to do my duty today. I was thinking more along the lines of breaking down

Have you ever had the misfortune to drive a maxxus? we have 3 and none of the fuel gauges work,you have to leave a mark in the log book when you fill up so people can work the mileage out,and if you VOR them they just leave them till something else breaks like the gear linkage (another common problem)

Well thats a given but it doesn't really help. A driver won't know if there is a fault in the transmission unless there are symptoms, and that would be the same for a lot of internal parts that are not checked by the driver. So unless the symptoms start showing in the yard, it is entirely possible that a vehicle can break down despite everyone carrying out all the checks diligently.

If you do break down shouldn't the Log Book or Drivers Instructions have details of what action you need to take.

No you aren't.
When you sign in the locker or wherever you are signing for the keys.
When you sign your name in the vehicle logbook after you have done your vehicle check you are taking responsibility for the roadworthiness of the vehicle.

If someone else regularley leaves a van with little fuel in it, put just enough in to last you your day/days. Give it back empty
