can i go on holiday while i am off sick

I have been off sick with a foot problem and stress for 4 weeks, iv been to my doctors today and she has given me a sick note for another 2 weeks but i am booked to go on holiday during this time. Can anyone tell me where i stand? Can i still go on holiday or will i have to cancel it? I booked the holiday a couple of months before i went off sick

go on your holiday and claim it back m8, you have a doctors note to cover your time off and when you do go back pick another week to have off :)

i spoke to my union rep today and they said that it is a grey area but he suggests i dont go according to his hand book

This is a complicated issue.
Royal Mail's sick absence policy states...

(d) An absent employee shall remain at their normal home address (other than to receive in-patient treatment) unless they have consent of their line or local personnel manager. Employees who are sick immediately before they are due to go on holiday must confirm to their Line Manager that they are going on holiday on the due date (unless sick absence continues and the employee remains at home). We also have to ensure that we are taking the appropriate steps to ensure we are providing the relevant support to our employees by using our health care professionals, Atos Origin. By maintaining this contact we can also look at alternatives. i.e. alternative indoor duties.

In the cases where this process is not followed for no known reason, Managers could take steps to hold an employees pay and change their absence from Sick absence to Unauthorised absence.

Get your doctor to put in your medical file that he/she feels a holiday will aid your recovery.
Then go & inform your line manager of your doctors advice & your impending holiday which you will be going on.
And if your line manager needs confirmation they have your permission to ask your doctor for a written confirmation.

If you want my advice i would not take the piss they will find somthing to get you on a conduct or worse depends on your manager i suppose.

I remember a lad in our place a few years ago who was off sick,but booked an holiday on the sly at the same time...anyway..he was stood at Birmingham airport waiting for his flight to Spain i think..looks behind him..and guess what..he only sees his line manger waiting to board the very same plane as him..lol...classic... and to add insult to injury..yes you've guessed it...his line manager was sat in the seat behind him!!lol
