Interview on Monday

Hi.

Newbie here! I have an interview on Monday with royal mail for postwoman job 20 hours a week (10-2) over 5 days (mon-sat). 3 month contract.

I have researched interview questions, and got all my paperwork photocopied etc...

I'm very nervous as I haven't had a proper interview in about 12 years! I also wanted to know what is the chance of my contract being renewed. I'm not after full time hours as I have a daughter and 20 hours a week suits me just fine. I would also not mind overtime in the week but not saturday (family commitments). If overtime comes done if not, it's not a major problem at all.

Has anyone got any positive tips and advice for me?

Chances are if you do ok and stick at it it will be renewed. Im on 3 months contracts and its been renewed each time. Been there well over a year now. Interview is straight forward. Just go in prepared, know your answers and be confident in what your saying. You'll be ok =) also im sure you'll be offered overtime. But you dont have to take it. Expect to work alot of Saturdays though. You normally get one Saturday off in every 6...

Good luck! To be fair it's not really an interview (you'll be lucky if they know you're turning up). It more of a check the paperwork, ask you if you have any questions then say bye. They may ask the odd pointless question depending on whether they're due for another coffee or not but if you just use common sense to answer you will be fine (the managers probably won't be listening anyway).

just go for it...personally i enjoy the job...can get stressful at times but ive had worse jobs...give it a go and make up your own mind...

Lol. This is what I don't get. Say you knock off 30mins for travelling and break. What sort of work will I be doing in 3.5 hours? Will I have to prepare my round and get it all delivered in that time?

Also when people say about 'cutting off' I read that as you have too much mail to sort and deliver in your alloted hours for that day. Is that right? Then I have read on here that you can do overtime or tell your manager that you can't do overtime that day for whatever reason etc... How do you know you have too much mail (I assume this comes with a lot of experience) but obviously in the beginning I will be a lot slower than others who have experience as I understand newbies get the hard rounds (understandable) to start with so will I be expected just to suck it up and finish when I finish without claiming overtime as they will expect me to be slow?

You'll find the round not prepped when you get in so you'll end up coming in earlier; and it taking longer so you'll be working over.

20 hour staff in our office end up working closer to 30hrs and not getting paid for it.

Don't panic. You'll be shadowed for first week. Shown around a walk etc etc. They'll know you'll be slow. It will all come to you in time. As for cutting off that's something that will become clear once youve settled. Don't worry. Its not all doom and gloom. Give it a go. If you dont like it you can leave. Its a job. :-)

Also dont do what you dont get paid for. No doubt they'll try it on. Makesure you join the union also. Anyone who works for free is a mug.

Hitcher, your union rep needs to go if that is what is happening. You get paid for the hours you work over. No pay, no overtime. Simple.

Why would people work 10 hours over their paid hours and not get paid for it?

At my current job we get paid for hours we do. Simple! I sometimes let them get away with the literally odd 5 minutes but I wouldn't give them 10 hours free labour! Why woul people do that? Even with the temp 3 month contract I wouldn't work for free! I dont mind overtime some days but would want to be paid for it.
