i heard today that (plz correct me if i'm wrong) that the UK was the only large european country NOT to opt out of the EU postal regulation where national postal markets be opened upto competition. Germany, France and Holland all opted out of the EU regulations and therefore keep their national monopoly of their postal service.

Is this correct?

If so whose responsible for the UK being included?

and why did we not opt out?

what possible reason, considering 3 major european countries decided to opt out, could there be to allow competition into the UK market?

is it only me or does this sound absolutely ludicrous?

if it turns out to be the Gov.t then thats the nail in coffin for me voting labour again !!!!!!!!!!!!

the other countries saw what the f*ck was happening over here and saw sense not our goverment all they have done is open up markets for everything (electric gas phones ) and they are all ripping us off with s**t services and sky high prices how is this benifiting us the public feck knows

I think you'll find that it's all about a small number of people (mainly Labour donors) making very large sums of money for very little effort/cost.

The European postal markets were supposed to be opened up to competition from January 2008. Our New Labour Goverment in their wisdom(?) decided to open up the UK postal market from 2006 - supposedly so that the UK would be ahead of the competition. It was like saying we're going to be killed so we might as well commit suicide now.

Nothing to do with Tony Blair's relationship with Rupert Murdoch who just happens to have interests in TNT is it?
Or the private courier companies who were 'lobbying' (ie wining, dining and backhanding?) New Labour advisers and ministers to deregulate the post office and give private companies a lucrative slice of the action.

What he means is we should sign up to everything in Europe that favours big business and anything that doesn't we can opt out of.

We should pull out of the E.U NOW!!!

We should STOP funding the Labour party NOW!!!

Competiton in my eyes should be about performance, quality of service not on how much they can undercut which ultimately involves pay packets ! We are told in snippets that we need to be more efficient and I agree, but becoming more efficient by cutting wages is not the answer.

Labour keep opting in to the pro business legislation from the EU, but keep opting out of all the ones that benefit workers.

For example the Working Time Directive they want the Opt Out to continue but most of the other EU states want the opt out to end.
