National agreement clarification on absorption

I'm a 30 hour postie and our 'summer lapsing' which as I'm led to believe lasts for so many weeks during early summer to this week has now elapsed. Now on Saturday we were told that we shall be lapsing all year round. Can someone clarify our position as to wether we should be asked to do this regardless of wether we have time to do it in the first place.

Absorbtion is as time allows within your NORMAL paid hours. If it takes you over you should BOOK or refuse and tell the Dom. Its then the Doms problem

Well when managers see idiots coming in a hour before their time on Saturdays and during the week they will make them do absorption the suckers are bringing it on themself's.

But what happens if the managers is paying a few individuals ie 2 hours before shift to get mail up quickly in order to lapse. Doing this is nothing more than a staff shortage issue.

You couldnt make it up , guys coming in early, not taking breaks ,BREAKING all the h/s rules doing themselves out of about at least £60 a week (£240) a month ,not only are you putting all that money in to the DO bonus fund there is a chance you will make a mistake .Like not wearing your seat belt at ALL TIMES ,if you have an accident and you were not wearing your seat belt dont expect your DO to support you because he wont. So carry on what you are doing , you know it makes sense NOT .

Managers can and will ask you to lapse anytime ,now you can politly tell him you havent got time to do it and he cant force you ,but if you refuse and come back early expect trouble .Me i just put it down on my overtime sometimes they have a go at me , but i just say do u want me to cut off end of conversation .

It wasn't, however whether you have time or not is the central point about lapsing. The P&M 2007 agreement had a section about working all your paid hours - lapsing if you have time is a direct consequence.

There is no such thing as Summer Lapsing - that was, I guess, a spin put on it by your DOM to get it in initially. You are more likely to lapse in Summer because of low traffic, and indeed Units could agree lapsing to free up a leave slot in Summer if they so wished. This is what people mistake for "Summer lapsing".

Yes - they can ask you to do anything as long as you have been trained and its reasonable.
