25 hours but asked to sort...

hi all quick question. im on a 25 hour contract. meaning most of the time i turned up and my frame is more or less prepped and i go out and deliver. sometimes asked to come in earlier to prep myself depending on what duty im on. paid of course.

the other day i was asked to help sort for 20 mins as everyone was behind with it. i was under the impression that was the full timers job as they have more hours and this sorting is built into their time. its a real struggle to get out on time most days and if im sorting im basically losing time to complete. 20 mins may not sound much but it soon counts against you.

i was pretty annoyed and ended up being an hour late out so told manager that i wont complete and wont do overtime as it was a saturday. he said he had used up all his resources and it had to go out and be done. he then walked off. i was so angry. so waited and then saw he was chatting to the union rep. so i went back and repeated myself infront of him and he soon backed down.

anyhow question is can i refuse this sorting as its not actually built into my hours?

You are paid to do 25 hours work. That can be made up of all sorts of things. They will spout 'operational needs' or 'as directed'. Do your hours, go home.........simples.

pretty much what i did. cheers mate. just worry thats all cos i rarely cut off but the past two weeks have been a joke and near on impossible. but im not trying it on or slacking. though i feel thats what they think. starting to think now im gonna stick to my 25 hours and just go out and deliver rather than take overtime prepping

If they want you to sort, then you sort, as long as you make them aware that you will probably be cutting off as a result and let them deal with it

They're paid a lot more than you are so let them worry about who's going to do the work and you just work the hours you're paid for (unless you choose to do more)

Stick to your 25 hours if you want, but don't decide what you should do or not do in those hours. The reason I say this is if you stick to the 25 hours then failing to carry out a reasonable request could give them an opening to put you under the microscope.

My advice is to do whatever they want but advise them that it will impact on the delivery aspect of your duty and "What would you like me to do" - Let them make the decisions thats why they get more money and bigger bonuses.

More indoor work equals less outdoor work , that goes for everything now, ips, prepping d2d, sweeping up if you have too. You are being paid by the hour, remember that.

Yeah, do what they want you to do, but finish at 2pm (assuming 9-2) unless you want the OT.

Think of it as the more time sat at a frame sorting, the less time outside walking lugging a heavy bag or trolley about.

Right lets get this issue put to bed.
The above comments relating to Work as Directed are true but managers are ABUSING the aggreement here and the Rep needs ti nip this in the bud.
Why?
Simple, if you are doing work which is proper to full timers and Its in the aggreement then how long before they will be doing that work got PART TIME pay?

Managers will see that if part timers can do more work on part time pay, then why are they paying Full time pay to the guy next to him ?
It lessens the safety of full time jobs.
So stand your ground and Dont do some one elses work.
Remember, They wanted this in, not us.
