Why is Royal Mail doing this?



In many everyday activities individuals and companies use information which is based on the location of an address. For example, such information is used by the emergency services, satellite navigation systems and Smartphone applications.

We want to help improve the accuracy of this information. So, we are mapping delivery point information which is accurate to the “front door” of residential and business addresses in your area. It could, for example, help the satellite navigation systems find addresses more easily.

Royal Mail already provides one of the UK’s most widely-used location-based tools – the postcode.

This initiative would improve the accuracy of current location-based information which underpins current and new technologies, without compromising the personal information of individuals.

With mail volumes in decline, it is important that Royal Mail continues to expand its range of trusted services. Royal Mail is undertaking this initiative in response to a need by businesses and consumers for more accurate local information.

No - they think there is no need. They did tell them though

Will any personal information be captured as part of this?

Royal Mail will not capture any information about property occupants. The purpose of this initiative is to map the longitude, latitude and altitude co-ordinates at each delivery point. During the trial in East Anglia, postmen and women will map the GPS co-ordinates of every property in the region using a satellite receiver.

This equipment is purely a distance measurement device and will not capture photographic or video images or other data.

What if I do not want the coordinates of the delivery point to my address to be used by Royal Mail?

• The data will be captured by the use of volunteers in each delivery unit who will receive the necessary support and training in order to carry out the task.
• All Delivery Office locations will be covered across the UK
• Data capture will require between 1 – 5 volunteers in each DO (depending on size)
• Data will be captured Mon-Fri, volunteers released from delivery following completion of preparation daily to work solely on data capture.
