Modernisation? NO NEED WHAT SO EVER!

Post by Sharkeyes »

Having worked for this dinosaur of an organisation for 23 years, I have seen many changes come and go, different ways of working and all that rubbish and I can't help but believe that all this 'MODERNISATION' AND WAY FORWARD, EMPLOYEE AGENDA rubbish etc. etc. is a big smoke screen and that basically, the people at the top including the NEC of the CWU,
'DON'T REALLY KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING OR EVEN ......WHY?!'

Can anyone give a very real convincing answer as to why this 'aggreement' that we are all suffering needs to come in. I doubt it.
We are told that we 'NEED' TO CHANGE THE WAY WE DO THINGS!.........WHY? WHAT IS THE REASON?
Who is telling, sorry, enforcing these changes?

We are told the same rubbish and propaganda over and over again and that 'WE' must accept these changes as the biblical answer to all our woes!

We are told that 'we' have to be more competitive and efficient and guess what.....this is in an UNFAIR PLAYING FIELD TO START WITH. 'DSA' is a prime example of other fat cats getting rich off your back and mine.

We HAD the best and most envied postal service in the WORLD, not so long ago, the cheapest, the most efficient, respected, trusted and the ONLY government owned department that ACTUALLY MAKES MONEY!

Now the whole thing is a pawn in a political chess game and we can all be sacrificed in the name of 'MODERNISATION'.

The only way that 'WE' as postmen and women of Royal Mail can survive this pathetic, ill thought out disaster that awaits Royal Mail, is for 'US POSTIES' to do what other people in business have done to protect their own livelihoods, jobs and services, and that includes our 'USO' obligations.

The NEC of the CWU need to actually for once, get back into bed with their members and NOT in th bed of the Employer.

I can guarantee that in any discussions, the actual faceless bureaucrats behind all of this are never mentioned, that being the EU and it's articles contained both within the Maastrict and Lisbon Treaties.

The Regulator is nothing more than an EU PUPPET and likewise any subsequent legislation that our government has brought in to comply with its directives.

It is this which has destroyed the job we did and loved, not just ourselves, but also the customer, both the sender and the recipients view on this.

The only future that I can see for the protection of our pay and conditions and as a real means of achieving an actual say in how 'WE' as posties can influence how 'WE' want and need to do things, rather than being told,
'You will do these changes and this way of working',
is for us workers to form a ROYAL MAIL CO-OPERATIVE, in essence dumping the senior management and the employer as a whole and 'going it alone', were 'we' run the show on how 'we' believe it should be run.
Management would call that a mutiny or a revolution, but if your officer is going to get you killed or your ship sunk without a proper mission purpose to fulfill, then he or she, needs to go.

Royal Mail is now a ship in uncharted waters, being driven by blind overpaid officers with little navigational experience and success in weathering the storm or indeed, finding 'the promise land'. The rudder has come adrift and the engines are failing.
'Those engines being 'THE MORALE OF THE CREW'.......US!

We need to be honest with ourselves. The employer is not and will not act in the best interests of you as an employee or the customer. They say otherwise but the speed at which these revisions are being forced in tells you a different story.
It's a simple case of 'put up and shut up!'
RM has this idea that the receiving customer does not matter as much as the sender because it is the sender who pays RM the money.
With the growth in online shopping, IT IS THE RECIPIENT WHO DOES PAY RM THE MONEY INDIRECTLY THROUGH POST & PACKING CHARGES.
If I order a T-Shirt, I pay the postage on my bill. How short sighted can our employer be? And these are the very people who 'we' are supposed to have faith in?

We are force fed the propaganda in the courier of well we are doing and yet I see more and more independent, private firms, individuals, global companies etc. muscling in doing the things that the customers want (and pay for) quite simply because 'WE Don't! anymore.

The issue of p739 cards is a disgrace. Posties have had all discretion removed in how we deal with our customers and their needs on an individual basis. Everything now has to be 'One size fits all!' but in the real world, that never happens.
RM risks further alienating the general public and I can't help but feel that this is being done deliberately with a view to DESTROYING ROYAL MAIL AND ALL NATIONAL CARRIERS OF EU COUNTRIES, because if you study how the EU wants to be and is trying in it's misguided belief that NATIONAL institutions are evil, wants to put down all such organisations, in it's mad attempt to harmonize Europe as a single European super state with NO national emblems or institutions that pertain to an individual country.

Just like EURO notes that have false buildings that don't exist on them so as not to be 'nationalistic' in favour of one country over another, it has created a situation and a trap which has led to the demise of all such things with 'NATIONAL' in the titles or have an association with nationhood.

The NHS is another one being carved up, privatised, call it what you like, blame who like in Westminster, but the truth is, that real enemies of the state, hide in Brussels.

Rant over.....for now. :vcfo :dcfo :ncfo :mad :mad :mad :mad

Super Rant ... agree with all of it, shame CWU won't listen to what the majority of their members know to be fact.

I would disagree with that.
I think they know exactly what they are doing...and why.

Can anyone give a very real convincing answer as to why this 'aggreement' that we are all suffering needs to come in.
The answer to that lies in the agreement by the European Commission to allow state aid which was dependant on Royal Mail's "modernisation" program cutting huge numbers of staff(fixed costs) from the budget..and the Postal Services Act 2011.

http://ec.europa.eu/competition/state_a ... _215_3.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Labour-related restructuring:
(60) Labour related restructuring is at the heart of the RMG’s changes to ensure
that a financially sustainable universal service can be provided for the long
term in the United Kingdom. RMG has already made progress and intends to
significantly reduce its workforce further through a programme of voluntary
redundancy and natural attrition over the period of the plan. This alone
represents around one third of the total relevant restructuring costs from the
plan, and will reduce significantly one of RMG’s core costs.
(61) The restructuring plan envisages, over the course of the restructuring period, a
reduction in RMG’s headcount in UK Letters & Parcels and International
(UKLPI) from approximately 160 000 people at the start of the year ending in
March 2011 to approximately […] people in March 2015. This represents a
total reduction of approximately […] in UKLPI between March 2011 and
March 2015, representing the equivalent of around […] a year. This labour related restructuring includes a reduction of close to […] central managers
(over 1 000 of whom had already left by March 2011). Labour cost savings of
£ […] million in real terms are forecast to be achieved between March
2010 and March 2015

(62) The labour changes proposed will impact virtually every part of the RMG’s
business. For example:
(i) outdoor delivery and collections, which are labour intensive activities with
high fixed costs, are being restructured; the restructuring is focused on
achieving savings including by World Class Mail (see paragraph (68))
being introduced with savings arising from this comprehensive system for
improving safety, customer service, quality and productivity in all delivery
offices;
(ii) there is a move away from manual labour intensive processing to
automated processing, with corresponding implications for labour;
(iii) close to […] managers in central functions are also being removed.

Without BT2010 there would be no state aid and without a state aid agreement the Government could not have helped themselves to £25Billion in pension assets in the guise of removing the pension deficit and without removing the pension deficit Royal Mail could not be sold.

To answer your question simply.

The Government wanted the £25 Billion.
The Royal Mail Board wanted the company sold.
The CWU wanted the pension deficit resolved.

It was an unholy cabal. :cuppa

nope cwu did what they were told
they had massive support from its members and turned on them because they they couldn,t handle the reallity of members wishes against their masters in gvmnt
should have been mass resignation from cwu by members led by div reps who were all elected by us
and joined or formed another union regardless if rm would recognise it or not
rm didnt steamroll change cwu put out red carpet for them with help yourself written all along it

I agree with a lot of this. A lot of things do not need to be changed but they are for the sake of it. Things work fairly well, but the disgusting amount of staff cuts and running everything on bare minimum is not good enough, it forces people like me to work overtime because it simply has to be done (don't go on about cutting off, etc) I'm the sort of person who does it to get it done not to leave it for someone else because I dont give a s**t.

Give us a few more staff, new vans, more of them, walks that work and equipment that also works and everything else will fall into place. Have enough staff (or available casuals) that can cover if someone is sick instead of lapsing on top of already lapsed duties. Train people properly, stop people leaving early, there's always things to do (sort of).

Stop using 'modernisation' as an excuse to slash budgets, slash staff numbers and try and cover it up, it just won't wash, and people will notice.

Also, who the hell thought it would be a good idea to leave packets with neighbors? yeah sure why not I will go back and forward on myself for a poxy jumper in a packet you don't even remember you ordered because you were too busy picking up junk food down at tesco with your benefit money. Or maybe you even had a job?

I wish someone actually listened to what we said...

include the cull of ips sorters, increased workload, people getting injured, turning staff against one another, the rise of backstabbers.

I have long held the belief that the juggernaut that is the EU would like rid of National Institutions like RM, a symbol of National pride and identity. How much of this is engineered by our own Europhile
Civil servants I don't know.It is hard to guess the motivations and actions of those further up the food chain.
I don't know whether I'm overly paranoid but I sometimes wonder whether cuts to our Armed Forces are the precursor to calls for a single European Army ? One for a different forum I suppose.

Modernisation, The EU and The British Govt cannot take the blame for the fact that there is a void within RM as a company between management and the postal staff which is the root cause of most of the problems. The organisation simply cannot function as one team as there is little trust and management simply wants push through their idea of modernisation change with little consultation. The customer has been almost totally betrayed in terms of quality of service where revision activity has been implemented with poor concepts, tools that simply do not work and an attitude that if staff hours do not match workload it is the responsibility of the delivery staff to make it work. Bringing undue pressure to bear on OPGs and bullying and harassment have become daily occurrences in many DO and MCs with proven culprits, who should be disciplined or sacked, left to continue with behaviours that are totally unacceptable in a modern organisation.

RM as a business needs a radical overhaul of its management structure and nothing will improve until this is undertaken. There needs to be zero tolerance when it comes to bullying and harassment and all planning initiatives needs to be tested in fine detail before they are implemented. Teamwork needs to be nurtured and all employees treated with dignity and respect. I don't have a major issue with WCM but why is everyone trying to invent the wheel and accomplish the same things at the same time, benchmark and use the things that work, ditch those that don't. If you want to cut costs redeploy those on the managerial gravytrain who are not adding real value (and believe me there are still a few of them), don't expect OPGs to work over their contracted Hrs for nothing because your planners are incompetent.

Will things improve prior to privatisation ? ... not a chance, will things improve after ? .... even less of a chance :(

Correct ... so why not have some duties that attempt to deliver when most people are actually at home?
