Branches membership numbers doc

Taken this from the latest NEC ballot,taken out the non important stuff,it gives you a list of branches and the membership count,if anyone's interested.

10,000 Postal members gone in 2 years.
500 from my branch alone and we haven't even had a mailcentre close.

the question is are they members that have just left the company by retirement or found new employment.
or is it just the fact that a lot of members have just lost faith in our union ?

Probably a bit of each sad but the real question isn't why are they leaving but why aren't we replacing them especially in our branch where the headcount reduction has been very minimal compared to other areas that have seen major mailcentre rationalisation.
Scotland No2 needs to have a serious look at how it organises and recruits new members.
Most people agree that being part of a union,any union is a real benefit so...why are the new starts not joining the CWU?

Part-tme contracts but full-time subs.
People don't view this as a long term job.
How many reps are part-timers?
How poor is the whole induction phase in RM? The CWU must seem irrelevant to a struggling newstart, especially to youngsters with no history of trade unionism.

I'm positive that the BT2010 deal had nothing to do with the reduction in members !

I work in Scotland no 2 area.I can only say what i have seen in my own office but the reps in there have not been near any of the new starts in the last year whats even worse is that many of the part timers would not know who there reps are

it is a good idea but really most people on this site have more of interest in union issues then most opg so not sure it will give a good over all look in the whole

Oh entirely agree - but one interesting result is that of 8 who voted so far only 1 attended the AGM, I would have expected a higher amount on RMC for the reasons you state.

The reason I don't always attend the branch agm is that it is a 50 mile round trip, possibly the reason a lot of others don't either

Some of the figures are misleading , Royal Mail have supplied information for those who are paying check off and what they have against pay roll . However when Branch's have researched this more there are in fact some vacancies so no one to recruit. Motion 60 has also got Branch's to go into offices and recurit and this months figures will show an increase . A lot of the issue is of course FTCs etc not wanting to join as they are not sure if they have a job.

That's the first time i've seen job insecurity used as a reason not to join a union.Every single FTC i've approached has joined because they are uncertain about their future.
I think if anything they feel as if we cannot protect them in the same way that we can protect permanent staff.
There is also a certain "snobbery" towards FTC's from some reps.

No mine neither, but maybe the information hasn't filtered down to branches yet - when was motion 60? Perhaps it would be more accurate to say Motion 60 instructed branches to recruit but like many statements made from the ivory tower fall short of the actualite.
