Why dont some postmen grow a pair??

Post by eastie »

Hundreds of posts since P/L about postmen going over and not claiming or refused payment of O/T :no no
Offices doing summer lapsing :left:
Grow a pair and CUT OFF and if they give you summer lapsing CUT OFF EVEN MORE.
When you cut off you TELL the management, you dont ask!! :arrrghhh :arrrghhh
We did this and they got rid of summer lapsing in our office 2 years ago and WE put down our O/T on the O/T sheet ourselves if we decide to do it WITHOUT BEING QUESTIONED BY MANAGEMENT.
As I say GROW A PAIR otherwise what do you expect they will take the p1ss

Good advice eastie - had the revision yet? Where is your ball laden office. Do the ladies have some difficulty measuring up?

A pair of what..cucumbers?
Every office has members that can be manipulated and cowed by management into not booking overtime or working for free,it happens everywhere, even in the big strong London offices...it's human nature.
It's also why unions were formed, you remember them, groups of workers standing together using their combined strength to protect the weak....
Only in a lot of offices the rep's not in tomorrow,he don't do saturdays, neither of course does the area rep,and anyway there's this and that and that and this to be doing and f**k it there's WCM sketches to get drawn and i'll get back to you on that one, because i have to get out early to finish my rep's walk.

Yes indeed, you work O/T you get paid for it. FA to do with union membership, just employment law, pure and simple.

As if some silly ex-postie manager has the "right" to deny someone money for O/T hours they've worked.

True, but there is an authorisation process and if OT is not authorised it won't get paid. In Thames Valley last year the authorisation of OT was withdrawn from DOMs for a period at the end of the financial year and had to go to DSM level >>> So RM paid their DOMs what 45k+ ? and couldn't trust them to authorise and hours OT ;)

Managers do have the right to question overtime,to be fair if someone takes out 2 hours worth of overtime and books 4 hours for it...if it was your budget and your job on the line you would question it as well so it isn't quite as clear cut a case of employment law as some might think.
As Budfrog says if it isn't pre-authorised you are setting yourself up for a fall but the only solution for an office that is regularly being denied payment for unauthorised but legitimate overtime is to stick together and stop doing it.
A couple of days of this is usually enough to change the mindset of management.
I don't do overtime but if i did i would make sure management knew exactly how much i intended to do and were willing to pay for it.....before i left the office.

Gill, what is doing your job properly? This is a vague and ambiquous expression...

You can try and do the job as best as you can following procedure and all that but the employer/management do have clauses that they can invoke to get round some perceived ways of doing things.

The idea of cutting-off is not as easy as some people here thinks - for starters, the Union (if I remember correctly) has aready agreed that we can be 30 minutes over depending on circumstances... Furthermore, there are times that we do not actually do the full hours that we are paid. Our employer can force us to return to base/depot to complete that time - hassle, I know; and people can then work at a slower pace (good!)...

Anyways, postmen rarely ever stick together on issues, so management can get round us and/or take advantage of divisions.

Some offices are tough, so managers are just as confrontational as some posties and these are hard times; continually cutting-off in some office might lead to aggravation and possibly conduct or even the sack. And the Union might not even be able to defend some people and/or their actions.

if you follow the correct procedure as in the conduct code they cant sack you.

they may make snide comments to wind you up or to scare you but if it ends up in tribunal (which they wont risk if you follow procedure and have a witness when you go in to see the dom) they will get laughed out of court as you have followed their own guidelines

Wish it was as simple as people "growing a pair" In reality everyone has different priorities, responsibilities and most importantly contracts. Show me someone on a 3 months rolling contract that has "grown a pair" and I'll show you a soon to be unemployed person on a 3 month rolling contract about to end!

The union needs to lead the charge if we are going to stand and fight, not individuals having tantrums. United we stand divided we fall.

Strong union leadership that can inspire the workers into action together is the only thing that can save us! :dance

............unfortunately we have Dave and he's too busy eating pies to give a flying feck about doing what he's been grossly over paid to do! :arrrghhh
Union what Union? Do we have a union?
