I was in the same situation once and I sent the Manager a Text Message, and contacted a mate who I knew was already in. On the first day of absence it always best to make as much effort as possible to contact them just to cover your own back. In the worst case, like if your bedridden, get someone else to call in.

Neighbour, or call family and get them to keep trying. If none of them are possible then you have to keep calling. Mind you at some point a decent manager would try to make contact with you anyway - but then there's the flaw
