HOW LONG UNTIL . . .

Post by doorstepped »

A postie gets the sack because a parcel he delivered to a designated neighbour says they never received it?

we had this discussion with our DIM at WTL, he said he would bring it up in the meeting he was going to be having that day with other area DIMS.

the suspicion will fall on the postie as the neighbour said they never received the parcel and the postie cant prove he delivered it to them, and the only thing the original householder has is a P739 but no package.

we have stated that we will not be doing the Delivery to Neighbour ( which goes nationwide at end of september until this point can be clarified )

we also asked what about overtime, I personally have quite a few long drives on my walk, so to walk up to the house, no answer, walk to designated neighbour, wait, deliver item, walk back to original house and drop in a P739, do this 10 times on ave ( but in reality 20 ish ) will add at least 30 mins to a walk. DIM said it would go on a day to day basis ( which means No OT will be paid )

Had the same discussion here too. Our DIM said "it won't take any longer because you will be on autopilot and eventually get to know who is not going to be in". W@nker.

If I'm in an area with really long drives I'll just leave a slip and not bother going to the neighbours. Some of our rounds are hard enough to get done in time without all this crap added onto them.

Not just me then - the cynic in me sees possible connivance betwixt neigbours as a distinct possibility

(have I spelt connivance right ?)

Only poss option would be to get signatures from designated neighbours when delivering - but then ... more time more faffing about etc ..

There is nothing to stop people denying receving a packet when you deliver it to them directly anyway. I guess it is just more likely with a neighbour.

Dim is the word alright - what a change from getting conducted for assuming no one would be in and leaving a p739 card with the item back at the office - they have short memories when it is convenient. If the neighbour is more than an easy next door drop we should leave a card - park and loop systems on foot are "once over the ground" with no time to even go back round with missorts - so there is hardly any time to play hunt the neighbour.

This is not hugely different from any packet we deliver currently.

Any item of mail that doesn’t require a signature could, in theory, be claimed to have not been received by the householder.

I’ve never heard of a postie losing his job over it. In the same way that there is no proof the householder received it, there’s no proof that the postie ever had it to deliver.

But if you now leave a 739 saying you have left it with so and so, there is now proof that you had it in the first place.

Ah, good point!
I was thinking more about the situation whereby any item can be claimed to be not received by the intended recipient.

:hmmmm - Oh f*ck it, don’t leave a p739, that’ll keep ‘em guessing.

I used to have one address where they regularly put a post it note on the door saying “Leave any packets with a neighbour”.
I used to take great delight in leaving a note saying “Left with a neighbour” – now find it, arsehole.

Given the "quality" (and I use the word very loosely) of 739 writing in our office it is likely the intended recipient of the packet will have no idea where it is or what it is.(or even if it is for them at that address)

We could also have a special thread to see which callers' office has the first person turning up to collect a packet that has been left with a neighbour.

It's potentially a very tricky situation.
If a customer doesn't receive a parcel because the neighbour has nicked it or refuses to hand it over will he tell the sender that?
I doubt it because it lets the sender off the hook if he admits it's been delivered, albeit to a neighbour so i would imagine the recipient will just deny receiving a "delivered to neighbour" card and state that they just never got the parcel and demand a refund from the sender.
The sender will then claim from RM and the whole oh yes i did,oh no you didn't game will start.

A post in the Customer Board got me thinking. Dangerous, I know!
alcockell wrote:I don't know ANY of my neighbours - and am actually pretty worried about all this... why are they reducing the reliability of the post in this way?
This raises a bit of a question....

I will set the scene...

I have a packet for Mr Alcockell's neighbour, Mrs Smith. New set of Rollers for her hair from Amazon. Mrs Smith, while waiting on her Amazon order, decides to pop down the hairdressers and get a shampoo and set because her hair is a mess without these new rollers. I attempt delivery while she is out, I get no answer

I decide to knock on Mr Alcockell's door to leave the packet with a neighbour. When I tell Mr Alcockell the situation, he decides he doesnt think it appropiate to take the packet as he doesnt know the neighbours. So I decide to leave a P739 and return the packet to office.

Upon her return home, Mrs Smith is horrified to find out her new rollers have been returned to the office despite being told that a new 'leave it with a neighbour' procedure has recently been put into place.

She phones up to make a complaint!

What do we think would happen in this case? Would attempting to leave it with 1 neighbour and it being refused be suffice to cover my back? What if I try a 2nd neighbour and they refuse it?

As usual with RM the thing hasn't really been thought through. In places where a neighbour is literally on the next doorstep is fine but what about the rurals as has been stated? Personally I am going to carry on doing my job as before....

I really don't know what all the fuss is about. The system of leaving with a neighbour was common practice when I delivered and I don't recall a single case of a neighbour denying they'd had it. I would even have a neighbour sign for a Recorded, though not a Special.
