HOW MANY PEOPLE IN YOUR OFFICE HAVE KNACKERED LIMBS

I was just wondering how many offices have posties who have had or waiting for treatment for failing limbs and backs, in our office we have at
least 14 who have had knee surgery 2 with hip probs and many with back and skeletal issues is this universal across the buisness? And do atos
think that everything can be sorted by physio , your thoughts please

Mmmmm think the HCTs will have a big part in this in the future. People in our office are not very happy with them and the union isn't listening.

just had hip op, the years take there toll in this job, walks are to long these days, 3 people in our office alone had hip ops this year.

out of interest what sort of age are these folks and how long have they been doing the job?
I wouldn't be too surprised if it's older folks who've been doing the job longer than I've been alive. However if it's younger people with just a few years service it should be highlighting a serious problem either in the approved methods and tools we're given to do the job or in the way they choose to do the job.
in order to FAIRLY understand the problem it's worth breaking down the numbers in to these categories.

In answer to your question, i think i'm the only one with problem knees but its something i've had my whole life not caused by the job

The walks are too long these days. Absolutely flies in the face of health and safety. Walking 7, 8, 9 miles a day, only the inhuman would inflict that on anybody.
My office has resembled a Crimean war field hospital for the past 6 years or more.

am 53, its the job though,,20yrs going out in all weathers carrying heavy loads up steep hills and steps. 10yrs on one particular duty that was ALL hills and steps. before i became a postie i worked in the marshalling yards as a shunter which was heavy but it was on flat ballast.and i WAS as fit as a lop. i had a total knee replacement last august, been doing the job with the trolley since i got back on full duty, which is great, unfortunately my left knee is gone now and im back on light duty til i go under the knife on october 12. there arefour others waiting similar treatment,,,,all with 10 to 25yrs in. the trolley is the key to eradicating musculoskeletal problems in future. its ALL old school who have these problems, but if the younguns dont use the trolleys then they WILL suffer the same fate.

Davey, what delivery method(s) have you been using over the years. Has it been cycle, bag carrying, using own vehicle or what? I think it is a big mistake to take faith in a LWT when there has been insufficient trial years to substantiate a claim that it will reduce muscular and skeletal defects.

Pf is now very common in our county, with management trying to poo poo it as an aching leg. Atospots think it is cured after 2 weeks on rehab and some guys are going to get their sick weeks in because of it , over christmas.
Royal mail has had it next year when all the claims flood in.

I never really had leg and hip problems under the previous methods of delivery - probably because movement on and off the cycle and the option to ride the gaps in delivery instead of walking gave a brief but welcome rest from pounding the pavement. Now that I pull a trolley around for four and a half hours without a change of muscle groups in action I have permanently aching feet and hips that are only happy walking in straight lines. I have to take all my rest days and never work days off now because recovery time is so important and the need to rest is impacting on activities I used to enjoy and now find difficult. There is no doubt that the Royal Mail mission to work us at 100% efficiency for 100% of our working time is going to mean that not many of us will survive to retirement age .... but isn't that what they want??? . I now have two years to go and every day hurts - I love the job but not what it has done to me physically over the 18 months since our park and loop revision.
