People Who Have Been/Are Deputy Managers - Is It Worth It?

I'd like to hear from those who have been or currently are (if current DMs are allowed on this forum without being crucified?)
Deputy Managers about whether they think it is actually worth taking the job. I've read other old threads and although i'd expect
posties to think they are scum i'm just interested in the actual job, not what people think of the title and how much coffee they drink :)

What does this so called management training consist of (cue a nice range of piss taking responses i'm sure!)

how much is the supplemental pay?

do you get petrol allowance for travelling to other offices?

what the hell do you actually do on a daily basis that could be considered beneficial to the business?

please any constructive replies would be appreciated.

from our own DO. you will need to develop a thick skin and be able to grow a 2nd face.
I watch those who used to fail deliveries,cut,stream etc. now stand over staff in classic B&H form against people doing the job.

I haven't done it personally but a couple of guys from my DO have recently. It seems it is just a way for RM to get lackeys on the cheap much the same as the short term contract PT OPGs. They get sent all over the place mostly to do deliveries in offices with high sickness or failed revisions. They do get paid mileage allowance but not travelling time which can be an extra 2-3hrs a day for some of the more distant offices they get sent to. When they are not running about covering posties jobs they are normally covering linemanagers or singleton DOMs days off, so nothing too stressful since there is no responsibility for budget etc.

Off the top of my head I can count seven deputy linos who have packed that job in and gone back to being a postman in our office. I think that should tell you all you need to know about the job.

i know a few people that became managers but quickly packed it in, they where doing managers duties then out onto a delivery also.. due to staff on sick,, so its called a lino/postie job.

Sort of out of uniform Team Leaders really.

As said before a bit of a cost cutting exercise by RM and while it can be beneficial for someone wanting to climb the greasy pole it can involve a great deal of brown nosing to make worthwhile. One of the issues is that many substantive managers are cautious of anyone with real talent.

Probably better to keep you integrity intact, at least that way you can look yourself in the mirror when shaving (men).

The sneaky back stabbing ones dont get put on delivery
they do manager work all the time. except those who come in early and get OT for doing IPS................
I raised this with the union rep(given that isnt the duty advertised) but it fell on deaf ears

I don't believe you'll get any of these answers unless you give it a go. God knows what motivates many of us! Many Posties are motivated by laziness, and that's probably a big reason for going for this type of job...... I've been envious a few times when it's been persisting down and they get to stay indoors and take a telephone conference.

To be honest the guy who covers our office doesn't do a bad job. I don't think he's as responsible for the budget, as he doesn't kick off as much as the regular guy every-time you book excess. He basically has to make decisions over duty changes if someone phones in sick and normally sorts the duties out for the following week. He ran the office for a while when we were waiting for a new manager...and I think he did a better job.

I've never seen relief managers brought in for deliveries. We normally get Posties from nearby offices, although a couple have taken out duties that were due to fail because of sickness. Why not give it a try? At least then you'll know......and regardless of what you do in this business you're never going to get rich and you're always going to upset someone in the office!

I wouldn't want to be a RM manager if you paid me in gold bars (not the chocolate biscuit, though they are quite nice).

All I see is that they are under a lot of pressure from above to cut the hours left right and centre and keep us all under pressure to not go over, not take any time off sick even when we're ill/injured/got a bereavement etc etc.

Certainly a job where a thick skin is compulsory, basically you've got to be the bad guy on a lot of occasions, so go for it if you enjoy that sort of thing as clearly a lot of managers are that type of person.

They are just busy trying to look good
I overheard one giving a young lad jip for finishing early the day before(as tyhey tried to load extra extra lapsing on him)
I pulled him up later as I used to see him all the time finishing before me(and on that duty i always made my time) every time.
He just tugged his collar and said Im management now.
