Debate with Lino over Hours, Advice Sought.

Alrite fellas, thought i'd throw this one out there.

I am on a 36 hour contract ( my finish time is 14.18 officially) and have been for quite a few years (was 33) but have now been asked to come in earlier on a Saturday than i previously did

The reason given to me (on Mon just gone) was because my day off fell on the day i come in earlier i now have to come in on that time on a Saturday - hope that makes sense!

I come in an hour earlier on a Wed/Thur/Fri which i agreed to years ago

My start times (i think because even that's getting questioned!!) are 7.42am Mon/Tue and 6.42am Wed/Thur/Fri and the Saturday can be either time (now) depending when my day off is.

I normally come in on a Saturday at 7.42 but they are now saying 6.42 tomorrow (because my day off this week was Thur)

Who's right? it has only been an issue this past week gone years starting at 7.42 on Saturdays

I've asked the Rep to look into it and put my start times in writing but i'm still waiting

Sorry it's a bit long winded i know and hard to grasp!


Any thoughts?

Sounds like a manager talking nonsense to me. Do you have a revolving day off or is it duty assigned (reserve).

We have had long and shorts for years and this has never arose.

edit: Are you all working under long and short days, if so, does this hour get clawed back from everyone, including office favorites?

Count the hours that should give you an idea - but looking at it I would say if you miss one of the early starts because its your day off then to make your hours match your contract then your manager MAY be right.

As I say though best to sit down and work out how many hours you work each week under the different day off scenarios. I did try but got too much to do today.

Pat, yes we have a revolving day off mine was Thurs this week and will be Fri next week.

No long and shorts, Full timers start at 630 every day and finish at 1418.

I think this may have been thrown up by the new PSP system.
A day is no longer a day to Royal Mail,it's now broken down into hours and minutes

Just tried to calculate it again starting at 7:42 and working til 14:18 = 6 hrs 36 minutes.

for 2 days that would total 13 hours 12 minutes

The other 3 days 06:42 to 14:18 = 7 hours 36 minutes

so 3 days = 22 hours 48 minutes:


Add it all up 36 hours

----------------------------------- Bugger so as long as during the week you have 2 days starting at 7:42 and 3 starting at 6:42 then your doing the correct amount of hours.

Check my maths though

Stinks to me though seeing as when i was asked to increase my hours by 3 a week it was mentioned just on Wed/Thurs and Fri - no mention if you day off was one of these you made it up on the Sat

Good question.

When i accepted the 3 extra hours they told me it was to do an hour on the IPS on the busier days ie Wed/Thurs/Fri - at no time did they mention if your day off fell on them days i had to make it up on the Sat.

Clueless management at our place to be fair.

It is down as 36 hours an my payslip from 33.

If you have a rotating day and the days are different lengths off you will have some weeks where you work more than your contracted hours and some where you work less. It will average out to your contracted hours over the 6 week rotation though so you do not need to work more hours if your day off falls on one of the long days.

I understand where the Lino is coming from now thanks to this thread and a headache

All he's saying is if my day off is say Mon/Tue which i start at 7.42 and i will start at that time on a Sat BUT if my day off is Wed/Thu or Fri which are my earlier starts(6.42) i need to start at that time on the Sat to make my 36 Hours up over the week.

I get it but that really wasnt what i agreed back when they asked me to do 3 hours extra ( as i stated above)

Piss poor really.

calculate it over a 6 week period, that;s the way you work it out as you do every day over the six weeks, your rest day will be every one of those!!!
