The floater should cover the duty and the person with the day off takes an uncovered duty. Thats how it should happen but we all know it does'nt because the duty holder bitches about it

We have had big problems with this

Not personally affected me as i fought for 18 years to get a 5 day week and aint working 6.

Its the usaul story the loud mouths get their own duties to work and the cover gets screwed. The meek get whats going.

thanks for the replies guys. a common problem it seems.
so we're in broad agreement that the manager can't force a floater/cover to shift if they stick to their guns? less so if your spare/cover. but i'd imagine that the people in our office that are floaters are well within their rights to tell the manager to GTF

I would file a genuine grievance if they dont capitulate.

Which really can only be solved by employing enough staff to cover all duties, there, I solved the problem, can I get a big bonus for my innovative thinking (and a return flight to New Zealand too because I've always fancied going there ).

It's probably a bigger problem the more people want to work their days off.
I will only work my day off if I'm on my own duty BUT I will only come in if the floater's also off that day, so everyone happy, and of course it's my choice NOT to do overtime on other duties, collections or whatever.

It simple if its your day off they would get you in no matter what to get the duties covered if you are a float you will not go home they will put you on another duty to get it covered you can not do any about it its tough but that is its how it is

as soon as you walk into your office, a manager can put you on whatever walk they like, does not matter if its your duty or not.
as long as you do a full contacted shift, you realy have no say in the matter

the above does not happen in reality but the option is there

you work for royal mail as an employer, as long as you are trained in that area of work, the employer can do what they want within opporational guidelines
