transfer process & where should i transfer to?

Post by mrneonshuffle »

Hi all,

I am an OPG in a small uneventful town and am thinking of applying to transfer to another area. I have no ties,
young single bloke looking to move somewhere which is far more suitable for a young guy to live in that is also affordable
on our OPG salary!

I would be interested in hearing from anyone:

1. who has transferred from one delivery area to another about how the process works and
2. from anyone who can recommend a town/small city (i.e. not london!) i could transfer to where I can vastly improve my social life

I know this might be a little vague as a starting point but anyone who would care to contribute (either seriously or humourously!),
your advice and knowledge would be appreciated.

thanks very much

Moved to blue shirts.
Also chances are if you're not already, you will have to go part time when you transfer, you may get lucky with a full time position, but they are at a premium at the mo.

From what I've read on here there is no ''transfer process'' as such... You just have to do it all off your own back, RM won't offer you any help at all.

yep your dom may not put much effort in ,mine doesn't!

Visit an office you want to transfer to in person and ask.

I did this few months back with one i had in mind. The dom there invited me into his office and we had a chat about it,he was actually very nice. He took my details and after that i had a few phone calls but they only offered me reduced hours.
So i turned it down. Im going to visit another office next week and hopefully will get to chat with the dom there

Hi,i transfered not that long ago,the first thing i did was phone up the office i wanted to transfer to and made sure there was a vacancy then i told my manager i wanted a transfer. He gave me a transfer form to fill out where you put down your choice of office, you can put down 3 choices. It took 4 months but that was because the recruitment process to replace me takes ages.

Does the below help, also rule of thumb seems to be to contact the office you want to go to directly and start the ball rolling from there...

last time i transfered was about 7 years ago. managed to find an office close to where i was living ( about 3 miles from me ). was a vacancy and was a bit worried it was going to be a 30 hour contract but lucky for me i managed to find a 40 hour one there. phoned transfer and recruitment number and did all the running. had a telephone interview with my new manager and then was accepted for the position about 5 weeks later. it then took 11 months before my old manager would let me go as he quoted " we have noone to fill your position ". used to comute about 4 hours a day and in total about 140 miles a day before i managed to get to my new office. managers at my old one were no help at all.
run back to when i was working in the city and put a transfer in to change offices it took 2 months from start to finish. how things have changed. then we had sorting tests before we could transfer. if you failed you were rejected.

The comment that you have to take less hours is incorrect. Every office has a different amount of full to part time ratio.
Say if a office has 65% Full time and one full timer leaves, then that full time duty will have to be replaced with a full time worker. That ratio after your revision should always be the same until next revision. The vacancy will be a senior part timer looking to go fulltime,A person looking to transfer or by local advert.
However. It may be the case that a person is seeking a transfer to an office and the full time ratio is already to the max. If that is the case, the person transfering will be offered a duty with less hours if he is desperate for a move.
A fulltime duty always has to be replaced with a FULLTIMER. If you want atransfer you have to wait for a full time duty and have possibly enough seniority to take that duty.
Royal Mail do not show a lot of zeal in dealing with transfers, so if you want one the work will have to be done by yourself. IE. Make sure your on transfer list and then hound your DOM,Area Mananger and DOMS in office your seeking to transfer to.
Its very rare to get a transfer from just being on the list as DOMs and Area Managers rarely check them and would rather seek their own ideas for positions in the office rather than what is correct proceedure.

While on the subject of transfers, I'm sure I read somewhere on here that if you transfer you lose any permanant contract you may have and are basically treated like a new starter at your new office... i.e. temporary 6 month contract?

Surely this cant be right?

If you opt to transfer then you will get what you pick.

If you pick a job to lose hrs you lose hrs.
If you pick a job the same hrs you get the same hrs.
Seniority goes with you.

The only difference would be if someone was thick enough to go for a job with less hrs and was told when transferring that the job was temporary.
