Fixed Term Temporary Contract

Post by bimwhoop »

I have been employed since August last year initially on a 3 month contract.

I got told at the time a revision was incoming at the end of the three months and if I fared well I would be given a permanent contract. The revision was postponed three months. Contract was renewed for two months. Then since it has been renewed monthly until May and nothing since. No contact or anything.

I have mentioned it but not been given a firm answer. Our CDOM at the moment is the third since I have been there, but he has been out of the office more than in since arriving. Apparently 'assisting' the area manager in another office with their botched revision.

As for the revision after a couple more postponements it has now been put back 18 months!!!

The office is currently struggling for staff but no new staff are being employed. Not until the revision has been completed. The whole thing is chaotic. Duties are failing regularly. I regularly return to the office only to go out and complete other duties. I am happy to do the overtime but I would be far happier to get a permanent contract.

Where do I stand with this? My contract expired two months ago and has not been renewed but I am still working. Should I be getting a permanent contract now that the revision has been pushed back so far? Apparently we have four vacancies but they cannot be filled until a revision has been completed!!!!

Anyone else in this situation?

Probably a fair percentage of the delivery staff now that RM only seem to employ on temp contracts.

bimwhoop - its a difficult one to answer so it might be worth contacting the Area Delivery Rep for your office as there are some new delvopments.

RM has an agreement with the CWU that Temporary contracts that reach or exceed 2 years should be made permanent. Because of this I don't think they HAVE to make you permanent before then.

However, working without a contract has implications which I am not fully aware of. I would ring/contact CAB and get their reading on it as well.

just call HR SERVICE and tell them that you didn't receive your contract and they will send you.

Bimwhoop several people I know are in a similar situation including myself. I have had reams of contract paper, the last two were only for a few weeks, I wonder how much it is costing to keep regenerating tomes of these ground hog day periodicals. I suppose it keeps those in the ivory towers employed.
On working beyond contract end date I think you'll find that if the contract is not terminated within its terms (2 weeks notice or whatever) it just rolls over on the same terms (so if you were on a six month contract you would be considered legally to be on another identical contract until it was replaced or terminated).
I wonder if all those people in the admin offices and contract printing factories are on the same tenuous terms and doubtful about what is going to happen to them at a couple of weeks notice. I doubt it somehow.
I'm sure the employee survey had at last one question on job security and how we felt. I notice in the Courier special on the results of the survey that this issue is not addressed. I wonder why.
