I currently work PT on a 20 hour contract on collections. Overtime is rare in my actual DO so I do OT on deliveries in a DO in another town.
Recently I have been told no vans are available and been asked to use my car. I didn't mind at first because it was wasn't often but now I have to use it all the time.
When I queried this I was told "I'm afraid there is no alternative and we really don't want to lose you on OT".

That is blatant failure of management to deal with a problem...
Shamefully this happens and is allowed all over the country....our depot is a complete mess ... they muddle and shout their way nearly everyday.... each day is a wait and see, do your best... farse ...health and safety in paramount one week and forget it the next week.... a merry-go-round of stupidity some days
And where is the union top brass apart from counting our subs money.... answers on a postcard...

And just how many times is the law broken and working practices bent or also broken everyday at ROYAL MAIL depots by management pushing their bonus targets........ we all know....we are not daft...
DO NOT DO AS YOU SHOULD DO AS I SAY... we are all suffering from these RM illegal practices.....
As always, where is the union when you need them ..like waiting for bus wait for the union to act....... crazy world of allowed injustice ani`t it..

Refuse to use your own car and tell him that own cars on delivery should have been stopped!

Then my overtime would stop. Can't really afford to live off my basic and I do approx 15-20 hours pw OT.

If you hand management the perfect weapon to beat you about the head don't be surprised when they beat you about the head with it.
I can't feel sorry for you because there will be other part-timers with more principles trying to get by on 20hrs who aren't getting any overtime because someone is willing to save RM a few bob on conveyance by using their car.
You are effectively undercutting your colleagues and that doesn't sit right with me.

I agree with Fish here apart from one point. Royal Mail is run in such a way that undercutting your colleagues is the only way to survive. Are you trying to tell me that out of principle you should allow your family to go without for the greater good of people you work alongside?
Human nature does not seem to work like that.

You quoted your DOM as saying "wouldn't want to lose you off OT"
Can't you see you're doing him a favour and he needs you to do the OT.
STOP USING YOUR OWN CAR! If you don't, it will come back and bite you on the ar$e one day!
He will find a van for you!

Why don't you ask your manager if you can borrow HIS car to deliver from,as he thinks using private cars for deliveries is such a good idea i'm sure he won't mind! He'll get the delivery done and you'll save on petrol and still get your overtime,problem solved,everyone happy.........you're welcome!
