was working with a new chap a few weeks ago and it turned out that between us we had a BA and a BSc. apparently there are quite a few folk with engineering degrees in our do (not management), so are us posties over-educated for the work we do?

I think the poll results will be a little misleading as it seems to be the more informed/discerning postman or postwoman who use this site. But then again, I might be talking pish.

It's probably not the wisest course to explore the level of education of your average postal worker during a financial crisis. It's the very nature of these things that people fall below their "natural level" due to the lack of opportunities elsewhere. I have friends and acquaintances who are qualified beyond degree level, yet are currently unemployed, or else in menial employment. I consider myself to be unusually intellectual, but I was faced with a choice between the Job Centre (a place I had been visiting weekly (perhaps fortnightly, I forget) for an over-long period of time), or working at Royal Mail. A difficult choice, but ultimately the discrepancy between salaries made my choice for me. Frankly, employers are not queuing up to pay me (almost) £10 an hour at present. Especially not for doing a shoddy job; making lots of mistakes, listening to music all day, and generally behaving like a feral child.

I'm a third of the way into an OU degree, doing an ESOL/TEFL course and been back at college doing more A Levels since last September.

I am AdTheBad BSc (hons) and an eternal student to boot.
I wouldn't swap being a postie for a better paying job, crouching over a computer screen, clogging up my arteries and playing office politics with malformed egos.
The entry level salaries I looked at before this job were not much better and often worse, with no guarantee of rising with terms and conditions usually worse.

As things are progressing, it turns out that a full-time contract is becoming a rarity and minimum wage is becoming the norm for even skilled and semi-skilled work, therefore, I do not consider being a postie to be a poor choice or second choice with regard to my supposed ability. Especially when I am pretty much my own boss for most of the day and have plenty of time for further study.

It pisses me off though, when people try to demean the job when they say "how come you're ONLY a postie when you have a degree ?"
I want to reply "How come you're a f@kkin snob".

Also my work colleagues are mostly good folks, posties are the greatest.
