Cut Off, Extend Or Do Free Work - Keeping Managers Happy?

I'm confused. I'm on a long rural, apparently according to other posties one of the worst in the office. On a light day (Monday/Tuesday) I finish early but on a Wednesday thousands of packets appear making it sometimes impossible to finish on time and sometimes I have to extend by over an hour. Now I inform a manager before I leave that I will extend, get back put my docket in and go home. It is routine that whenever this happens, the next day I get questioned (almost harassed) by senior managers in the office asking why I overran so much, I tell them packets, leaving the office late, etc, but they throw it all back at me. It puts me off extending and to be honest I don't want to extend anymore. I cannot in those heavy circumstances do it any faster btw.

The problem is I am on a 3 month rolling contract. I realise that overtime ruins their budgets, but won't work for free like they seem to want me to do. The way I see it I am helping them out by getting the job done but I don't get any thanks, only 'why did it take you so long? Your making excuses!'. I am almost scared now of putting in a docket because I am worried they will finish my contract and I can't afford to lose my job. Any suggestions what I should do? In their (the managers) eyes is it better that I cut-off or extend and take sh&t? Or should I come in early and get the job done without pay? BTW if I was on any town walk I'd be finished early every day probably.

Any suggestions please.

Well they do pay me, screwing it up everynow and again, forcing me to raise the issue, but they do pay it. It's just the stick they give me for it, making me out to be a liar. And that isn't good for confidence in that your rolling contract is going to be renewed. I'm just trying to think of the best way to keep them 'happy' without me doing free work!!!

only if you let them



just be strong and dont let them f**k you about they will soon turn to someone else to try and get savings

Sadly this scenario is probably played out in every office to some degree. Don't be bullied and if you fear for your job it may be worth joining the union for a bit of back up.
