what is the bsi ?

Post by daveyeff »

our office is apparently running below the nationally agreed 100% bsi according to our dom, this is the reason he gave our rep for bringing in staff early on overtime to get it up to 100%. you see, the rep went in to see him because we,ve just been given an amendment to our local agreement of lapsing only on mondays and tuesdays, to lapsing 6 days a week. so the rep asked why have you got people coming in early to do ips and then still put lapsing on. and this is what the dom told him. i said lapsing is put in place because we are not supposed to have enough work to take us up to our full days work. if he,s bringing in people on overtime then he,s totally contradicting the lapsing scenario. the rep said lapsing has got nothing to do with the bsi ??? so what is the bsi and what is it for ?? is 100% agreed ?? i think bsi= BULLSHIT INDICATOR.

Bringing staff in on overtime will not increase your BSI figure. Get your rep to make sure the IWT is correctly completed with the right amount of hours filled in on the 'hours input' page. Most offices can't get there current office bsi figure as most managers don't know how to use the IWT correctly. 100% is not agreed, you plan to work at your current office bsi figure with a little improvement if possible. But first you have to find out what your current office bsi figure is by getting the correct information into the IWT. Good luck, if no joy, raise it through the I/R framework.

If you are struggling on a part time wage then why wouldn't you come in on overtime.
If they offer you an hour to come in and prep the duty this then frees up the full-timer who would have been prepping the duty to increase their lapsing.
If 3 p/t staff are brought in and this enables the manager to lapse a 5hr duty and in the process throws up a spare body to offer to the sector he has saved hours and crawled up the DSM's backside.
The p/t staff get much needed overtime and the full-timer still only has to work his hours.

Another question would be - why do f/t staff come in on their day off so p/t staff can be sent to other offices with staffing difficulties?

So it's ok for part-timers to come in on extra docket (IF it is part-timers coming in) which screws everyone else up with the lapsing, but it's naughty for full-timers to come in on extra docket on their day off.

Both are as bad as each other. Jobs a gooden.

Nearly but not quite.
Because the full-timer working his day off will be increasing the total number of indoor hours available, meaning he will be increasing lapsing opportunities for his colleagues as well as dispatching his colleague to a different office.
Does anyone remember when full-timers were only to be offered the delivery element of their day on overtime if they were asked to work their day off?

its a total contradiction of the lapsing idea in the first place though,,, im not arguing that part timers need the exra money so its understandable for them to come in. what is a complete paradox though, is creating overtime so duties can be lapsed.!! its not reflecting the fact that there is not enough time to lapse. lets not forget that lapsing is only due to be done because there is NOT enough work in the day to take us to our full days work. if the people were not brought in on overtime then the lapsing would not be achievable. that in itself is contradicting lapsing procedure. when they dont bring people in the lapsing is NEVER achieved in the normal working day. i put down on the overtime docket last week that the reason for overtime was ''lapsing''. the dom didnt like it one bit, he said i should,ve just put down ''extended delivery''. i said no, the reason i went over is because you said we could lapse when clearly we cant. feckn shambollic.

because they need the money mate. its nearly all staff (full time by the way) that have got young families that he,s got coming in an hour or so sooner at 5 am ish, some part timers are coming in an hour before their time as well to box in and thus assit duties to be lapsed.
