Good on the guy! At least this goes to show that hard work pays.

Of course, some might call it brown-nosing but the fella has got a full-time job on the recommendation of your manager, I guess?

The problem is that your manager could not easily offer him full-time job at your office because people will be up in arms about seniority and so on... Now, your office will have to work under a bit of pressure till you are fully staffed or find another overtime king.

Its amazing how some folks don't realise that that we should all work as a team; and that sometimes we have to go the extra mile for the sake of the office (as well as the money, of course).

I will be thinking positively of this experience because I might fall under the same category - although, I don't do 2.5 rounds or work for nothing; not very often. I need to get out of my office to get full-time role/job!

I will give all the advantages of a having my own round for full-time hours - then one will not have to do some much overtime to make up the money

What happens in a failing office? Surely, it cannot be a good place to work. If we all work-to-rule and we don't cover manager's and RM's failings; it will soon backfire and the Union will not support such an office.

The times when we had gone on strike, we could have used 'work-to-rule but the Union knows it will open more of a can of worms and soon RM will be privatised.

I hear what you are saying but it will never work - people want to get on with things and it makes sense to help the workplace than to always look at the negatives and be unhelpful.

I had a situation where a floater came to my round with 4 bags of mail because he had done his ankles in... No one else will do the work and since I am on the round the next day and often do overtime and I was nearby he came to me. I could have refused but I know that the next day will be disruptive with almost 2 days mail to deliver and the round has many double-slots cos of flats etc - it would have been a mess. I would have had to do some extra work the next day whether I liked it or not...

Of course, I did not have to do the OT and many would not have been able to do so. But the guy was injured and its not management's fault. I have also had to extras because of car crashes and someone kid going into hospital etc... If I could do it, I do - at least I get paid.

good place to work? no
however, neither is being harrased to work over to cover those failings.
I used to do a fair bit of OT.
however that was choice to cover 1/2 rounds.
it s now a daily thing for many duties in my DO

My DOM keeps badgering me not to cut off and go over but if I went over by 1 hour he would pay me that.
Why then does a docket king do my cut off and he always gets 3 hours?
My round is next to the office and is only 5 mins away so you can't say its travelling time.

I understand the sort of pressure one can be under to do some OT especially when you have done some in the past... However, what I am trying to say is that it is not always the DOMs fault or even the big bad ugly and unrealistic Royal Top Management. Sometimes, the office just needs all hands on deck. An office with 2 long term illness, one on light duties, the odd absence and piloting P&L -on top of having a junior visiting manager might really struggle.

The biggest problem is with absence - it is had to cover in delivery offices except they have temps (usually NOT!) or they can negotiate with other offices (much harder with P&L).

No one should be pressured but then the Union has signed up for us doing at least an extra 30minutes (to be made up some other time???) in a day. Hence, without overtime kings or volunteers, there will be lapsing and/or mail, packets and customer complaints will start to pile. Surely, it is not good for anyone, even those that sound like they don't care if everything goes tits up.

Privatisation and temp work and piecemeal rate will eventually ensue and we shall all be losers. :whistle

These people who come in early and are at the beck and call of management are cutting there own throats. If they are part time and coming in early not taking there breaks etc they are giving RM time for free. If they just work their hours and not touch the overtime more hours would be put into the office and they could gain full time hours.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet

I don't think you can really blame part timers for doing the overtime, what I have an issue with is all the full time who take the piss...i mean they are in before time in our place throwing their own walks out and many are even in an hour(or More)being paid `overtime` for doing the sorting.
They are also doing overtime on cut offs etc being paid 3 hrs for an hours work :no no ..one big headed t.urd goes around bragging he's had a £500 a week in hand wage for the last 6 months :speak to the hand
Meanwhile the arse of a DOM won't pay for a couple of 25 hours men to cover duties that are not covered through illness etc...I saw the overtime figures for 2 full timers and they had 65 hours `overtime` between them and said wouldn't it have been better just paying two people on part time hours and got told I was an arguementative c.unt.

Maybe it's time to give up trying to reason with these people and try reverse psychology. Just put a smile on your face and encourage them to go ahead and knock themselves out. I work with people who don't have a break, with a smile on my face, I encourage them to knock themselves out because I will be a shareholder soon  . To be honest, since the end of job and knock a lot more people at our place now take their brakes and I haven't had any hassle about having my break for a good while.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Really,that's a new one.
found out today that the DOM would not transfer him as he was so usefull with the hours etc he did :, the only way he could change his office and get the full time job was to do it off his own bat so he went to the office he wanted to join as he had heard of the hours he needed , he had to leave this office and reapply at the new depot, so trusting the new manager to keep his word and re employ him,but it all worked out ok and he starts his new job soon , :Applause :Applause

"while i appreciate that he must have needed the cash , if this firm had offered him a full time job , (there are some in reserve here)he would have stayed , , now it looks like the managers will have to do some work to cover all the duties he did , way to manage staff " I don't understand POSTMAN reply... You thought your manager should have given him a full-time job at your place, right?

Could your manager have given him a full-time post and why did he not do so?

Anyways, it is interesting to note that there are full-time jobs still available especially for someone that took the risk of re-applying for a job... The postman must be very good and/or well connected: good on him!
