D2D profit
Customers are charged 6.2p per item for D2D's if I read the article right.
So if someone has 6 D2D'S one week with a round of average 1400 calls that would make RM over £500 a week on junk mail alone.
No wonder they are more interested in us doing D2D's than letters.

Re: D2D profit
6.2p is the highest price for the smallest customers. Most will be paying less than 4p (for a <20g D2D)

Re: D2D profit
Income doesn't equate to profit once RM's deducted the cost of the centres that bundle them into the right quantities for each round, then distribution via mail centre to delivery office, then time spent there and on delivery with them and also our payment for them although it's not called that now.eastie wrote:Customers are charged 6.2p per item for D2D's if I read the article right.

We have one duty in an old "working class" area of the town near old mills and it has about 1200 DPs, yet its seen as a steady round (except when we had those lightbulbs) as you can do 4 DPs in the same time as most duties can just one. No of DPs on a duty is not really a good measure of size or difficulty, its terrian, density and distance that, for me, are more important.

Re: D2D profit
Whilst Door to Door has increased overall , it has only gone up from an average of 2.4 per office to 2.9 per office.
There are two things which are stopping growth in the door to door market and there are that Royal Mail are still expensive to customers compared to other providers of delivery of unaddressed mail. The other is quality is poor in some areas and remember if Royal Mail do not deliver the door to door contract they have to repay the money and pay for any associated money which the company has invested in the door to door drop including any call centre which has been set up etc.
Remember Royal Mail have a door to door market team which also cost money who's job is obtain the business in the first place.
Royal Mail strategy in the future is relaunch the door to door product in a massive and new way. They now intend to offer the full service to customers everything from design , printing ect to delivery.
Whilst Royal Mailm has the vast majority of the market for addressed items , it has minority of the market for unaddressed items and that market is worth 2.7 billion and Royal Mail are determined to increase its share of the market.
it can only do that if it delivers the product to spec and quality improves. We all know that many postmen and women and managers still consider door to door as inferior to that of addressed mail. The new management structure is design to change that and this is why there is research into how each delivery offices delivery door to door in order to ensure there is a more standard way it gets delivered.
Lots of managers have been dismissed for failing to treat door to door the same way as addressed mail and I expect this to increase as the product is relaunched.
Now many might argue that door to door into workload was the wrong move , but Royal Mail desire to capture more of the door to door market could never be done by the ad - hoc arrangements which use to happen in offices when it was not in workload.
Remember the delivery supplement has now gone up twice in line with the pay rises. The old Door to Door payment had not increased since the 1995 door to door agreement.
in addition Door to Door was not paid when you either never recieved any items , or were on leave or sick and many did not deliver at Chrismtas. The Delivery supplement is a permanent addition to basis pay , the only difference is it is non pensionable and is paid 52 weeks per year.

Re: D2D profit
It is unfortunately a measure of how unpopular the move away from individual payment was that we are still talking about it two years later.
I think the problem lies not with the delivery supplement itself but with the perceived lack of visible resourcing and what is seen as an unfair imbalance of workload between those that receive very little and those that receive five and six regularly.
This is mostly down to a combination of management's continual failure to see D2D for what it is...extra mail and the original joint guidance on the time it takes to collate D2D which has proven to be a gross underestimate...i don't know what the "live trials" consisted of but we have since done our own trials which have been accepted by management and the times are out by an average of 50%.
There is a drive on to increase quality and i think the target in our area is <1% returns,i'm not sure if that is national or not.
Frames are checked off on a daily basis and all returns are counted individually by duty and then collected by management, the days of members simply dumping excess in a york at the end of the week are long gone.
The strange thing is i've found since D2D has gone into workload for me at least it's a much less stressful experience but that may be more to do with the acceptance that i will be working to time no matter how many D2D's i have.
There are in my mind only two reasons to worry about D2D...the first is if members are being bullied into achieving the impossible and that is something the union should be monitoring and challenging management over...
The second is if you are still chasing time and that is just tough s**t.
