Sickness and stages...

Hi all. I have a query for anyone who can answer.

I started working for Royal Mail in June last year (2011) and have now been working for the company for a year now.

Last year in November I was off sick for 6 days in total. All of which were signed off by my doctor.

I've been off sick this week due to a car accident. (Van hit the back of my car and I got mild whiplash). Im due to go back Monday all being well.

The question I ask is will this trigger any stages? What with my sickness last year? I'm not sure how it all works. I think Ill be ok as it was 7 months ago I was off sick.

Assuming you have completed your trial period and are not classed as a new entrant, you will not trigger a stage one warning unless you have four absences or 14 days in a 12 month period.

So you should be ok.

My contract says that from commencement of employment I will be on a trial period for 6 months. I've been there a year on 3 months fixed term contracts that have been renewed each time.

well for a new entrant or someone who is still on trial, to trigger a stage one would be 2 absences or 7 days in a 6 month period so if the chaps last absence was November then he still should be ok

I never say 14 days as its the 14th day that triggers it. Remember 13 days and you can't go wrong. Also to the OP remember they count Sunday, so if you are fit for work next Monday make sure you ring in Saturday about lunchtime and leave a message to say you will be back Monday.

Is this 12 months after your trial period or is your trial period included in that 12 months??

Confusingly both.

When your on trial its based on a 6 month period - however once you have been removed from trial any sick absences during the trial are counted in the 12 months.
