Royal Mails new system .. On BBC Breakfast Thursday

Postmen cannot always complete their round on time and bring mail back to their depot now... because of high volume s of packages...

The new system of knocking at doors to leave items with neigbours will increase the amount brought back because of time wasting knocking at peoples doors.... you either use delivery time delivering or spend time knocking at extra doors...... YOU CAN NOT DO BOTH IN THE TIME THE POSTPERSON HAS TO DELIVER THEIR ROUND..... Their delivery time will not allow it and more post goes back to the depot...

It will work if EXTRA PEOPLE ARE EMPLOYED AND DELIVERY ROUNDS ARE REDUCED .. to give more time..... but employing 1000s of extra postpeople is not going to happen........

Trying to deliver to someone that is not in is like a mother cooking for the family when she has no idea when they will come home each day...THINK ABOUT IT...?

Delivering to someone that is not there is crackers and frustrating and often a waste of a postpersons time, day after day..... And to keep wandering around knocking at neighbours doors wastes time and creates return undelivered mail

REMEMBER.... Being a postperson is the only occupation in the UK that requires you to walk 4 - 6 miles a day in all types of weathers........trying to deliver to some poeple that are not there..... how daft is that....?

we normally walk for 5 hours a day at a speed of at least 2mph, so theres 10 mile, if we did the suggested 4mph that would be 20mile, obviously we couldnt do that, but we do at least 10mile. thats on delivery alone

Plus the indoor walking.
Everybody forgets about the indoor walking.
It's not as if we are sat on our arses during the indoor time.

i know mate, thats why i said ''on delivery alone'' :also there are some people in my office who walk to work in the morning and home again when finished.

The main issue is that RM want posties to knock at several neighbours doors to try and leave any undeliverable packages with them, for people that are not in.......if a person takes it in, then go back to the delivery address and write a note to say were the package has been left at....and then start delivering again......come xmas .... you will be knocking at doors to try leaving 25 packages a day with someone else..... the last 2 streets may get no mail delivered ... as delivery time has finished...so take 2 streets or so back....

If more posties are employed it may well solve this NEW SYSTEM idea and you may have time to knock at many doors.... no extra posties..then no chance to do all the extra door knocking at houses that also may not have nobody in....

Knocking at maybe 2 houses to ask someone to take a package in will waste valuable time wondering around .....with 5 packages all the naffing around knocking at doors at 5 mins a time is 25 mins wasted ...if you work just to your time...this will inccour returned mail...some in GT yarmouth bring back mail most days now anyway...

Another usless bright idea from the top of RM.... if people are not in.. then provide posties with extra time during their round to waste opperating this new system... by taking out less mail...to deliver

CWU took part in the trials of the system which started last year and has had no negative feedback from postal workers on the initiative. "It's good news that the trial has been successful and we do join Royal Mail in calling for reform", Bob added.

How many doors do you knock at to get rid? How about leaving it with some skank who decides to deny they've ever had it? How about leaving it with someone who can't stand the recipient or vice versa. Sounds like Glen was the sensible one

Just leave the card and say you couldn't find anyone else to leave it with, simple solution (unless the people have already told you to drop the package off at another local address).

This is the fundamental flaw in the system,there has to be a reason for us to do it and i just can't see why we would.
It's awkward,costs time that is unlikely to be planned into deliveries,may cause complications with mail integrity and could cost jobs both through the conduct code and in reduced callers resourcing.
I hate to sound selfish but what's in it for us?

What's in it for us?...........you ingrate! You've had a 3.5% pay increase, yet another £100 colleagueshare money - pro rata, promise of another £100 for Christmas next year, guaranteed no redundancies until ..........well, whenever the current modernisation plan grinds to an eventual halt - the problem with people like you is - you want to bleed the company dry

It wasn't long ago in a WTL session that a manager told us if we leave an item with a neighbour and for whatever reason the recipient never recieves the pkt then WE will be held responsible and it will be treated as if we have lost it, I've never been keen on leaving items with neighbours anyway so that was all the incentive I needed to carry on with my policy of not knocking on neighbours doors.


This company really is being ''managed'' by people who have no idea what so ever about the day to day realities of doing this job... as if we've got time to start going round knocking on 3 or 4 neighbours doors with every packet we can't get rid of. I brought back 15 noteleft pkts today, say I spent 3 minutes going knocking on neighbours doors with them thats an extra 45 minutes on my duty time (and thats on a day when I already went 1hr 15min extended as it was anyway)

The problem is that we deliver to every house, whereas competitors deliver to the address and neighbours, may be 1 house in the road, they all have vans. In my village the competitor may only have to deliver to 1 house, I'm sure they do not go to every house, its a stupid idea.
