seniority problems
Our office is well into the revision and we have just found out that "all" the shared van walks will be one full timer/one part timer per van. This has a serious effect on seniority, as some of the staff who have been in the job over 17yrs will not have their own walk (they will be floating), whereas some of the part time staff who have been in the job a few months will have their own permanent shared van duty!! Surely this cannot be right? Any help or guidance would be really appreciated.

Moved to 2010 forum.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: seniority problems
first thing you need to find out is what has the union rep actually agreed to on your behalf, as the revision cant be that "well into" the revision with out him actually agreeing to some of this stuffsickofthejob wrote:Our office is well into the revision and we have just found out that "all" the shared van walks will be one full timer/one part timer per van. This has a serious effect on seniority, as some of the staff who have been in the job over 17yrs will not have their own walk (they will be floating), whereas some of the part time staff who have been in the job a few months will have their own permanent shared van duty!! Surely there are two issues, full-timer / part-timer and driver / non-driver.
One might expect full-timers and drivers to get the better deal.

Re: seniority problems
First of all our union rep has agreed to these duties as he is "not a fan of seniority". Secondly the majority of staff can drive so theres no issue there and thirdly its alright being grateful youve got a 39 hour contract, but when youve worked for the company for 17 years and some 24hour part timer who has worked for the company for little over 12 months is laughing at you because they are guaranteed their own walk it is a very bitter pill! Surely there must be something we can do? Some full timers are thinking of reducing their hours to p/t so they get their own walk (surely this is playing into Royal Mails hands!)

Re: seniority problems
just like you said, you are lucky to have all the hours and to have enjoyed working for Royal Mail when things were still rosy and the job was easier.
This is a relatively easy job so your 17 years is not exactly that relevant to the ability to do the job and how well the job is done.
We all have to be flexible these days - and as a senior, you should have volunteered to be a spare, floater, reserve or whatever because you should know every round since you have been at the job so long.

Re: seniority problems
Judging by a lot on here there seems to be a cop out with these revisions by some, the biggest changes to the way we work ever and some aren't bothering and going for the easy life.
And any scrote that laughs at others misfortune is just a,well a scrote.
Not 100% on how to sort it as it depends on your staffing numbers, but the rep doesn't agree nothing till the members agree.

we had our revision about a year ago and this is what happened,we were told two full timers couldn't share a van duty ,nor could two part timers and so seniority went out of the window. these days neither of the above rules apply, basically managers do as they please.

Are we in Victorian England or are perhaps you are a Conservative Supporter.travisbickle wrote:youve got a 40 hour contract so be f***ing gratefulsickofthejob wrote:Our office is well into the revision and we have just found out that "all" the shared van walks will be one full timer/one part timer per van. This has a serious effect on seniority, as some of the staff who have been in the job over 17yrs will not have their own walk (they will be floating), whereas some of the part time staff who have been in the job a few months will have their own permanent shared van duty!! No one should be GRATEFUL they have a job, thats what gives managers reason to bully and harass. when people think like that.
Be pleased yes, but grateful give me strength - are bosses grateful that they have employees to do the job, are CEOs grateful that ordinary workers combined generate more income for a business than any managerial level. Yes bosses are so grateful for the hard work of employees that they are closing pension schemes, freezing wages, laying people off, reducing hours most without consultation - yet they are surprised when these same workers complain about unfair bonus schemes and outrages wage increases.
Perhaps you could give some reasons why we should be grateful, beyond the banal "You've got a job haven't you". You might change my mind.

Some of us have been waiting for a full time contract for years even though we regularly do 40+ hours a week......

Re: seniority problems
Is that the fault of the Full timers, is it reason enough to be grateful for a job, is it so much the workers fault that an expletive was used.travisbickle wrote:Some of us have been waiting for a full time contract for years even though we regularly do 40+ hours a week......
Its the fault of Management not aligning hours to tasks, it could be the fault of the Union not pushing RM hard enough, it could even be said that its the fault of people willing to do hours above and beyond their contract without complaint.
Unless official Industrial Action is taken, and Full Timers ignore the Unions instructions, its pointless to blame the situation on other workers. It also does not answer the question why workers should be grateful to have a job, after all some people don't seem grateful that they are getting extra hours above and beyond their contract, and I don't think they should be - they should be angry, but please aim that anger at the right target and do something about it, instead of perpetuating the "Divide and Conquer" ethos which appears rampant in Royal Mail.

Well as many of the full timers at our office come in an hours before their time i would say that it is their fault!TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Is that the fault of the Full timers, is it reason enough to be grateful for a job, is it so much the workers fault that an expletive was used.travisbickle wrote:Some of us have been waiting for a full time contract for years even though we regularly do 40+ hours a week......

My posts are not about being combative and I hope you understand that, I am honestly trying to ascertain why you think we should be grateful we have a job.
