HI guys,

Just a little gripe i need to get off my chest. Been working for RM since November on the same walk. Never been late, always done o.t if asked to and kept my head down and worked hard. Had to take a day off for the first time a few weeks back due to a family emergency (where the dom wasnt very sympathetic to say the least). Since that day iv done 4 different walks now. Questioned the dom and im a leave reserve all of a sudden. Iv not been there long enough to merit my own walk,strange when i had one from the first day i started. Now next week should be my 1 in 6 Saturday off, but i think they may be keeping me on this current walk for next week to which would mean i have next wed off. Am i entitled to the sat off or not say anything and just work the week and have weds off? To be honest iv never known a company with managers as incompetent and 2 faced than at RM!!!

It is , or was, common practice to break in the new guy by leaving him on the same walk for a few months until it was thought that they'd got the hang of it. Now you're a cover and can probably expect to remain so until a walk that everyone more senior than yourself doesnt want becomes available. I've been a cover for 5 years here and the duties that i have been offered were all s**t/floating cover so i passed on them. Whichever walk you're on, you get the day off that the regular guy was due to have (in theory that is i hardly ever get a saturday even if the duty im covering is due to have one. Those days normally go to mates of the boss who want to go to the match)

Same happened to me - after a few months on the same round, I'm now a reserve, with a different day off every week and not knowing what day that's going to be until Friday the week before. It's not all bad though - I was getting sick of delivering the same old stuff to the same old boxes every day, every week. At least now I get a change of scenery and new faces on the round! The overtime opportunities are loads better too because I know 10 rounds in the office now.

I prefer being spare, personally. The same walk gets boring after a few days. You do get f*cked over more as spare but you do get experience of a lot of different places. I probably know 50 walks.

i know it seems to suck at first but in the long run its a lot better, i've done all the dutys in my office now "part from driving ones" so at least if i'm getting moved round i'm not struggling to throw in, pull out and getting lost on rounds!

The management in Royal Mail, both at senior level, and at lickspittle level, is just appalling, truly appalling.
Even the one's who have done the job, walked in our shoes so to speak, even they are crucifying former colleagues with monster walks, unrealistic targets, using snidey tactics like bullying and harrassment, intimidation. I curse them all, may they be soon be wracked with pain.
A truly awful company that deserves to be in the 19th century with it's appalling attitudes to people.

Yes I'm afraid RM is a terrible place to work now, I've seen many changes in just over 20 years, roll on Privitasation then it will get even worse... lol.
