Starting tomorrow

Finally starting tomorrow, well induction tomorrow and then start at the office on Tuesday. Just a few questions.
Only tonight I downloaded the attachments on the 'Welcome to Royal Mail' email. Am i right in thinking I should of included them in the envelope that I posted the signed copy of my contract off in..oops? (they're an 'agreement to work additional hours' form and a 'P46' form)

The contract I'm on is 24hours, starting at 8.30am-2.30pm. My DOM contacted me about two weeks ago and indicated I'd probably be working more hours and be starting at 7am. Will I be paid an overtime rate for any hours I do over my contracted 24 or is it a standard rate upto working 40hours?

Bit nervous about tomorrow! says to wear 'smart casual' clothing. Any ideas what the induction entails? Don't want to go either looking too scruffy nor do I wana wear fancy gear if I'm gona be out getting 'hands on' so to speak haha.

If you're in a Delivery Office then you'll be out on the streets delivering so, wear clothes that you'll feel comfortable walking the streets in............for hours.........in all weathers :-) (until you get uniform - jeans, tee shirt and trainers will do).

Yes you will be paid over time rate but its not much different to normal rate till you go over 10 hours OT even then it still sucks welcome to royal mail btw

Thats incorrect only paid normal rate up until 40 hours even if contract is for less than 40 hours then over time rate

im 25 hours i get paid more for the first ten hours then a bit less for the second ten hours and then it gos right up for the next ten hours not sure what happens after that theres only so much tea you can drink in a week

I hope they ASKED if this was OK with you. Make sure you're paid for it, if you don't get anything extra in your wage slip let them find someone else to do the extra time. Agree with the manager BEFORE you go out that will be paid extra, if not - only take out what you can deliver in your time. They push you to see how much slave labor they can get away with in the first few weeks so stick to your guns if something doesn't sound right.

Sounds like another DOM trying to take advantage of a newbie.

Finally - make sure you take your 30 mins meal break.

Well they probably will soon be on the BT2010 75% FT roster. ..you know like the 25 people in our office who are still waiting since before christmas to be made up, yet expected to work full time,still it was nice of the union to do fack all until people started putting in grievances about it.

If its your induction then that will be class room based and smart casual is fine. They go through health and safty and other stuff that makes no sense at the time until you start doing the job.

On Tuesday you will be "buddied up" with some one and usually get 4 days training.

Dont wear jeans - too hot in hot weather and dont dry out if they get wet.

Take some drink with you and some snap.

As for the dom saying you will be in at 7 !!! sounds dodgy to me. I've said it on here a few times, but they pay me from start time to finish time and thats it, if they want any other time from me then it gets paid for.

My training guy told me to be in at 8 ish on my second day as that is when he comes in to prep the walk....... he and I only get paid from 8:50....... he was in at 8 I was in at 8:49 ( igave them a minute of my time, as it was my first week and i wanted to show willing)

My advice..... start as you mean to go on, easier said than done in this climate of job losses etc but if they can take the piss with you, they will. I am always polite to managers, but if I dont want the over time then im not doing the overtime.

you dont get any extra for the first ten hours, you only get paid the normal rate up to full time hours, the difference is the extra delivery office supplement to take you up to the full amount as you get closer to 40 hours, its not a higher rate than normal hours

Always amazes me walking in to a virtually empty office at 8.50, part-timers and all. They start the same time as me but they've already left. How long does it take to do redirections, bag up, take the crap out to the van (ahem, car)? There's also the stranger phenomenon. The part-timer who has already been in for half an hour when I walk in, yet is still there when I've bagged up and left! How bizarre.

I couldn't agree more. I just don't get it. If these guys were young kids that didn't know any better, then maybe, but these are proper grown ups that should know that working un paid is not a good thing. I questioned a couple when i first started, who both came in at least 30 mins early and they both said they like to finish before their time as they are getting away with getting paid while not actually working...... i kid you not.

As others have said loose cotton trousers (combats ideal) and a polo type shirt and fleece top, that kind of thing.

I think you will have to sort this 7-8am straight away and ask if you will be paid if you come in early.
