hello!
i started with rm in december 2011 and had a three month contract, fair enough. this was extended at the end of the three months for another three months ending on june 30th. today i received another contract, but this is again only 3 months? in the last two contracts, there has been an extra sentence saying "the reason for your contract being for a fixed term is that it is anticipated the requirement for your employment is likely to cease on or about the expiry date because of business reorganisation". then it says it could be "sooner or later" with notice given under 'clause 13'.
i was under the impression that after 6 months, you are past the trial period? about a month ago i did hand my notice in because it was stressing me out too much but the union rep told me my manager said i could take it back, and so after some thinking i did..
thanks for reading!

try not to worry about it. sounds pretty standard, was on the same 3 month temp contract for 15 months till they gave me a permanent one.

New agreement coming soon which should resolve your problem, being debated on the 28th June in the policy forum.

I'm not sure how that would help someone with 6 months service whose office was yet to feel the weight of a delivery methods revision.whatamess!! wrote:New agreement coming soon which should resolve your problem, being debated on the 28th June in the policy forum.
3.2 Royal Mail employees will be employed on permanent contracts, except where there is a genuine short term need identified. CWU will be consulted in advance where there is any such requirement. Temporary contracts will not exceed two years unless it has been jointly agreed that there are very exceptional circumstances. The position of temporary contract employees will be kept under regular review by the local parties, with a view to converting to permanent contracts where and when possible. Additionally, where change programmes have been completed and bedded in, the status of temporary contract employees will be reviewed and converted to permanent contracts unless there is no need for this additional resourcing or where there is an identified and agreed need to continue with a fixed term contract. Royal Mail confirms that as part of the review of this agreement, it is the aspiration to reduce the length of temporary contracts to no more than one year.
I do like the new agreement but it isn't watertight.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

thanks for the replies!
on a slightly related note, what would happen if i took a day sick, (around 7 months in job with no warnings/sick days at all) and then 2 after 9 months in the job with that sick day?
yesterday i felt terrible going in but am concerned about the whole 9 month trial thing going on..
