Can I Please Get Some Help on the matter of absorptions

I am on 18hrs/week i do 4 days wed-sat 4.5hrs a day, i dont work mon or tues never have. I have been with royal mail for over 3 yrs i would like to get some information plz.


Today i went into work and my walk was changed without prior notice to myself but guess managers can do that, but what bothers me is that i was told i had to do an absorption as my old walk was being absorped due to volume drop, So i did another full walk and had done an absorption on my old walk. I want to ask do I have to do the absorption as my hours are less than everybodies on there i am only on 18hrs/week or does this not matter. I was told by a staff member that union rep has agreed to it with manager yet i find it unfair as my pay packet aint as big as other employees who come in mon-tues etcetc. It might just be tough luck for me as seems to be the case with royal mail nowadays that they can do what they want when they want whether your a union member or not

The only honest answer is if you have time to do it within those 4.5hrs....you do it...if you don't..you don't.

Rule of thumb with Absorbing which can be confused with lapsing - is that in either case you only have to do it if you have time within your duty to do it.

If it takes you over your contracted/duty times then they should not force you. However, they will pressurise you, when you tell the manager make sure you have witnesses.

Check with the rep/colleagues to see what the local process is but check downloads for the "Over running deliveries" for a guide on what you and they should do.

You can of course claim overtime if you go over, and if you want to, but make sure the manager is aware before you leave the office.

Sorry to bore you! If your rep has resource meetings then he/she should be using the delivery forecast tool. This picks a week from last years mail traffic. Then he/she can manually put the packets/tracked in. This is the only scientific way that the office KNOWS it can or cannot absorb. Just merely "telling" someone mail traffic is low is not scientific. It is lazy and s**t!

No offence drb but i wouldn't trust the DFT to forecast anything.
Absorption as far as members are concerned must be based on individual duty capability to lapse not what the "office" can achieve.

Hi Fishtank. I agree. The individuals administering this "system" are idiots,(management). They are lapsing "1 in 10" as directed! However lets break this down scientifically :

The Indoor Workload Tool MUST tell you all hours used for the work once it hits the ramp. So lets see the "pressure hours tab" at the bottom...hmm! 10 people coming in half hour early = thats 30 odd hours per week pressure.

Oh look! 60 people not taking their meal relief! = 300 hours per week pressure!

Load of hours on the IPS? Thats because not enough people are on there. You will see more hours on prep. (Individuals doing deals no doubt!)

Transfer your DFT traffic to the IWT and there you have it! Per week too! You can then,(and this is important as the IWT only shows INDOOR. Are you lapsing indoor or outdoor? Both? Disagreement. There should be a level of earnings potential!

Now this method is not working..and here is why :

.Resource meetings are mandatory..and they are not happening ( disagreement to be handed in)
.Non sharing of the IWT and DFT (disagreement)
.Non Pay & Mod compliant (disagreement)



The IWT will also show what vacancies you have and point you to the Way Forward and Stoke agreement on vacancies (disagreement).

Ask your manager on which scientific basis he has come up with his absorption plan? None! I f***ing bet you!
