New Dog INSTRUCTIONS !!

Told at wtl , that all postmen are Not to get out of there vans if there is a dog about . We asked if we pull up in a farm yard etc and there is a dog ,which the postman knows to be friendly can we get out .They said no ,we have to beep and if no one comes out we mark the mail DOG LOOSE and try next day So we have a 0 tolerance of ALL DOGS

Standard RM covering their arses but now they've given you that instruction then follow it (really should have a letter sent out to every address telling them what will happen).

Dont you worry i do ,post office said they will be sending leaflets out to the public telling them of this .Most farms have dogs and most of the dogs are friendly now i have to wait for them coming out !!! cant wait to get my delivery timed again !!!

Postmen and postwomen of all people should never use the phrase 'the dog is friendly'. I have a zero tolerance towards all dogs: big ones, little ones,dangerous ones, ugly ones, labradors or even the Andrew puppy or Lassie.

The idea is that postpeople should not put themselves in a position of risk and of course, it covers Royal Mail in terms of H&S and the rest.

I get postmen taking a micky saying that a certain customer thought I was a cissy or that I was miserable because I refused to enter a property or stroke a so-called friendly dog.

There is no such thing as a friendly or good dog - it all depends on the day, the circumstance and the rest.

It is not a new dog instruction - you should not approach a property with a loose dog or known to have loose dogs. Why take the risk?

* Royal Mail or the government should force all dog owners to have a 'dog sign' for starters.

Thats alright if your in a van , if your the walker they sometimes just come from nowhere and you dont have a chance

Thats alright if your in a van , if your the walker they sometimes just come from nowhere and you dont have a chance

Having a van doesn't mean that you don't get out of the van and deliver mail in loops, so you get the same risks with dogs...........I prefer to be able to read the moods of individual dogs, that has saved me on more occassions than I can remember.

We asked if your in middle of an estate and a dog appears from no where ,the answer use your common sense !!!!

Not having a chance to avoid a dog is pretty obvious... However, you can still show your displeasure at the customer or politely inform them that you are not allowed to take risk with dogs.yes, some dog owners take offence but as a Postman, i am not there to pet their dog or be used as a training tool for the dog.

A dog owner saw me coming and opened her door and dog came out. I stooped in my tracks and refused to enter through the gates - she went to say that the dog is fine and all that and that the regular postman does not mind. I told her I do mind and I am not supposed to risk it. She did not respond by putting the back in the house - I walked off but on the way back I delivered the letter but I will just take the letter back otherwise.
