tracked Olympic Tickets

Our DOM flaps around with the daily Olympic tickets sent tracked telling everyone to make sure there is no redi etc but on saturday I had some Olympic tickets and knocked at the door for a signiture and a 10 year old answered , I asked him if his parents were in and he said no.
Not recognising the name on the envelope to the address I asked him if he knew the name and he said " dont know that name " so I didn't deliver it and put REFUSED on the PDA after consulting with the DOM.
Thing is can you take the word of a 10 year old or could the occupant of the house have purchaced the tickets for a friend ?
Bit of a grey area and maybe it would have been better if nobody had answered the door and I left a 739.

I would have P739'd it anyway, let the adults deal with it (I have done it before).

You should probably have P739'd them anyway...even with the kid answering the door.
The call is yours whether you think a child is mature enough to sign for something,there is no definite minimum age limit and if the only person available at the address cannot sign for the item it's exactly the same as if no-one was there so it should be carded.

So what you are saying is a 10 year old answered the door . How did you know there age ? And a ten year old should not be alone in the house ? Who was looking after him or her ? You only asked if the parents were in . How about a childminder ? They could have signed for it .

i got worried that the parents might complain to the press or something after i got a 6 year old to sign for something, but was told that its fine/doesnt matter alongs the person that signed for it was in the home at the time. so i guess dont worry, you can get anyone to sign for it. besides i dont see the problem, as its part of their learning & its not as if you made them sign for something that effects them

My attitude is that if they're old enough to be at home alone and old enough to answer the door then they're old enough to sign for something, and 'What's a signature?' is just indicative of our failing education system .

2. Not their concern as long as the child appeared safe and unharmed.

3. Again not their concern who was looking after them.

4. You wanted him to go through a list, when a 10 year old - or even younger would normally have said "No but my {insert appropriate adult} is"

5. Yes they could have done - but decent child minder would not let anyone else answer the door.

To be fair I know where you are coming from but its a bit much to expect a postie to go through a Q&A session to get a signature.

Thanks TBT . I was always under the impression that you had to be 16 or over to sign for something ? What if that had been a special delivery with a value of £1000 ,s Ten year old signs for it and then parents deny all knowledge ? RM then pay compensation .

It's up to the person getting the signature but most people I know would just card it and let the adult come down to the DO and pick it up.

Well i actually thought it was 14 or over to sign for something (not sex) that what i was told all those years ago and have stuck to it ever since, if i think they are under
or don't think they are mature enough then P739. Never had anyone complain about it, not to me anyway.
But 10 far too young, and yes i think it is our concern why he was home alone are we not the friendly postman/woman

I let anybody who comes to the door sign for an item. I am not employed as an expert on ages or signatures. Our job is simple, someone from the household has to sign for the item, and as long as a mark is made in that box it will be good enough.
There can be no legal challenge to this from royal mail so don't worry, it is an impossible grey area if they tried to get people on it, and I have never heard anyone getting in trouble for it apart from people who signed for it themselves.
