GENERAL CONFERENCE 2012 - MOTION 80

The above motion tabled at CWU General Conference 2012 was accepted by the NEC, it reads as follows:-

“Conference recognises the work that has been done in the past but looking to the future we need to understand that the CWU benefits that we offer are out of date and do not attract anyone to join or remain a member.

The NEC is instructed to immediately review the CWU membership benefits package with a view to update and offer a more diverse package which will appeal to everyone.

Tyne and Wear Clerical”

At the NEC meeting held on May the 29th it was determined that this motion would be processed by the Senior Deputy General Secretary with a view to completing the review by February 2013.

Obviously when it comes to considering members benefits there are a wide variety of products on offer that we could consider. However, before attempting to scope the potential for developing any set of products I wanted to take the opportunity to ask Branches for their views.

We are aware that in some areas Branches have agreements locally with various providers for services and benefits and it may well be that these could be expanded on a national basis.

Alternatively it could be that Branches receive requests or suggestions from members asking if the union could provide a particular benefit.

We would like to hear from Branches with any suggestions they may have to expand the portfolio of products in a benefits package that they would like to see included as part of the review.

In order to progress the matter I would be grateful if Branches could send their comments to sdgs@cwu.org by no later than Friday the 29th June 2012.

There may or may not be some merit in this but i personally think the CWU should concentrate on improving it's core representation and organising services before it worries about whether members want cheap car insurance or tickets to see Justin Beiber.

I once got a quote from the "Cheap for CWU members Car Insurance" it was £48 dearer than the quote from my broker. I think there are a lot more things that members could do with - like decent representation, for a start reorganise the branch setup.
