There seems to be quite a high percentage of people in our office who want out in order to do something else. This ranges from people who absolutely despise the job and want out to those who aspire to a different career and are biding their time in the job while they complete courses with a view to moving on and/or apply for other jobs. Are there many of you who are in that boat and if so what are your aspirations and reasons?

i was a manager for a contact center, with a university education. I relocated had a baby and my husband lost his job. i went out and found work, as a postie. And i'm quite happy at the minute. cant say i'm going to stay here forever but for the moment i'm happy.
The job for me is too physically demanding.

i just hope our union look at the members sick-records,resignaitons,retirements through ill-health,
by the end of the week staff are physically knackered as for the job offer e.v.r then royal mail could shut another office down, and how many postwomen and postman die while on duty or will that be covered up.

My aspiration is to save up enough money to quit and travel the world. I'm not really far off that right now, probably another six to twelve months work would enable me to (comfortably) achieve that ambition. Bear in mind I'm talking about traveling for a whole year, possibly more, and seeing the world in its entirety (within the limited scope that we are able to achieve, of course - traveling the entire length and breadth of the globe, while not impossible, is highly implausible). I generally don't tell people this is my ambition because they think it's hat-stand. Complete short-termist madness. Idealist nonsense. Typical young idiot mumbo jumbo. I guess in a sense it is, but I'll never be young enough and free enough again to enjoy the world as it is, and to have this opportunity to go out there and see it. I'm an adventurer by heart, and it would be my biggest regret if I wallowed forever in this same desperate plight purely for the sake of paying the rent, shagging the next girl, and moving on and on ad infinitum in that circle until the circle itself defeats me. That's just me, I guess. I've always wanted to live hard, live fast, and die young.

All we get now is "slurp - you've had it too easy for too long and now you can't handle it -slurp (boss drinking coffee)" but even then when we finished earlier we were still totally knackered cos the job is so physically demanding , so now it is impossible to lead a healthy life when off work etc.
The army has tried doing this at 4mph and they say it is too much - Why can't the managers do it from start to finish and see how they like it . Or preferably a doctor to see what stresses we are going through. Please pass this message round before we have more heart attacks and fatalities.

Only four more deliveries left after two and and a half years !! Seems strange really to be leaving but finally managed to get a full time job with a career pathway so its a no brainer really.
Seen a few changes though, even in that relatively short time :-

- Revision implemented and an end to lapsing using your own car,,,,Good !!

- 12 months later everyone running round finishing early, not using trollys and lapsing on the horizon again,,Bad !!

FWIW I dont think RM will ever get postman to work their hours until they introduce a proper clocking on and off system. Human nature seems to be a driver in trying to beat the system no matter how much work is piled on and its probably exactly how RM want it.

On a personal note I cant knock my experience although it was very hard at first having never done a manual job ( fat managers sending me out with no clue and no training when I first started ! ) and my only worry about leaving is losing my personal fitness and putting back on the three stones I lost !!
I will also miss the lads and the banter and the fact that personally I was lucky enough to take to the job and not feel any pressure. I did say I would reconsider if they made me FT but I think there was more chance of me getting Moyas job. Ultimately no matter how much they say they dont want you to leave you are an easily replaceable resource ( In my case probably some poor sod on a three month contract they can mess around even more !!)

After a bad time a few years ago I'm now much happier in the job, I'm not too tired by the end of the week, even doing 5 hours on delivery isin't too much for me, I just take it as a job, start at my time, finish at my time and just do whatever they ask me to do during those hours............everything becomes much easier when you get your head around that principle

Once again its the time out on the street which is the real killer. It seemed fine at around 3 hrs max (some are still on that) but as you exceed 4 hrs (bike and trolley work) it becomes harder and adds up at the end of the week.

I dont come in early and make sure i take at least 30 mins ML during the working day. I recon iam as fit as i ever was although iam now mid 40's but my weight is the same as my 20's (thanks RM ) However do 5 hard days in the heat of 4.5hrs delivery (11.3 miles gps) getting up at 4.20am and iam whacked by the end of the week, who would not be.
