Cutting off - New Trick by DOMS

Post by IcanthelpthewayIam »

Hi all

Just been told about a new trick being tried by a dom in a nearby office that i thought i would share with you all,

in this nearby office there are a few guys who do take the piss but others who struggle to deliver in their time, both are groups who cut off on a busy day, so dom has came up with his new brainwave, everyones finish time is 1430 so what he is now doing is when any postie tells him he is going to cut off he is telling said postie to take all the mail out with them and asking roughly where they will be by 1300, he says he will then come out to find them at 1300 and agree with them how much mail they can deliver in their last hour and half of duty, thus those runners who cut off but are still finishing early are being made to work between 1300 and 1430 and the ones who are struggling he is taking the cut offs back to the office himself, now he has roped in the union rep into this and when going out to meet postie union rep is in van with him

actually think this seems quite reasonable the way its getting done done as the only ones complaining at the moment are the ones taking the piss!

What happens if he doesn't appear?

To be honest if members are cutting off and then taking the piss by regularly finishing early he should be looking at the conduct code not playing stupid games of cat and mouse.

Its nice to see that his office has a spare van sitting about for him to be able to drive out and bring the mail back.

He is not allowed to carry the mail in his own car

he only started it this week and he has appeared every day so far, as far as looking at conduct code and game of cat and mouse, these runners finish on street and puch off, so without going down the route of changing their 318s to return to the office and the problems/disagrements that may kick up he feels this is easiest way for him to ensure everyone is working to their time, rep not happy with it but he doesnt really have much ground to argue on that he can find as dom is accepting everyone who says they will cut off at face value and not pressuring anyone to take unreasonable work loads

Why doesnt the DOM just track the pisstakers PDA's on the computer to see what time they finish or wait for them at their last delivery point.
These early starters who then run around doing job and knock are ruining it for the ones coming in on time, taking breaks and finishing on time.
It gives a false impression and makes it look that P/L is working.
If they want to come in early , make them finish with everyone else or better still get the DOM to stop people coming in early UNPAID.
They seem to think that if they come in and start an hour early they are ENTITLED to finish an hour early

Dom getting reps duty covered on docket, the hour and half he is paying daily on docket for rep has saved him about 20 hours so far this week on docket

He tried that but rep put in a disagreement as it was in contravention of the pda deployment agreement whereby the gps function was not allowed to be used for conduct issues

To be honest I think this is a ery vgood idea, the way he is doing it is he believes everybody until he sees different, better use of management time, it would be something I would do, he will also see the walks for himself or her.

But surely he has just transferred the problem to another location if he is questioning members on the street about how much the can complete in the next 90 minutes.
What if they say one bundle?
Will he accept that at face value?
It's very unprofessional and a waste of management and reps time.
What happens if 20 members cut off?
How could he be in 20 places at 1300 arguing about what is or isn't 90mins work.

A few seem to be questioning the motives of rep on this but I think they are doing so based only on whats been said here, and in that cases I believe their judgement is flawed and unfair.

However to try and re-balance the debate perhaps I could make the following suggestions and comments.

The rep may be feeling uncomfortable with this, but he is getting release, and he appears to be acting as a witness which hopefully protects members. Just because you sit in a room or a vehicle with a manager does not mean your best mates - Reps have to talk and work with management if we want effective representation by the Union.

Also he is getting release and 90 minutes of dockets is being handed out then even on that there are 2 sides. I side is that his members are getting a chance to earn more money. The second is who is to blame, the rep for trying to help members who are cutting off and therefore appearing to act with the best intentions, or the members grabbing the docket. :hmmmm

Managements tactics, and the piss taking members, are the ones whose actions need questioning certainly more than a rep who appears to be doing their best in a situation not of their making, but one of poor management. As FT has said it is certainly a poor use of resources, but with the hands off approach CWU HQ seem to have adopted recently, the reps is probably acting on his own initiative with no backup or a support.

Of course the rep could be a bad one, and only out for themselves, but so far there is little evidence of that,

Not my office but i know a few of the lads there so only going by what they have said,

his theory is the ones taking the piss are finishing WAY before their time and cutting off, thing is when he has been out to meet the guys on their rounds he i has not asked any questions when they judge what the can complete

not sure why you feel its unprofessional but its his job to keep costs down and he has saved a lot of hours and like i said the only ones who are not happy are the runners who are trying to get an early finish, most he had so far was 10 people in wednesday say they couldnt finish, he just staggers the time to meet them and has managed he said if it got much worse than that he would maybe get one of the linos in the office to help but he is not keen as he doesnt want him or lino to be questioning posties on street without rep, and at least its a dom who is working his time,

Oh and REP is really not happy about it because he is getting a lot of earache from the runners but his main problem is he cant argue against it as the DOM has been completely reasonable about every contact he has had and keeps saying "fair enough" when postie says how much they think they can manage, also posties now know dom is out on the prowl so wont get away with finishing early and keeping it quiet
