Colleague Suspended

Just wanted a bit of opinion.
This afternoon a colleague was sat on the back of his van with the back doors open having a bit to eat, when he finished his snack he walked across the road approx 5m, and put his packaging in the bin, with the doors still open. he came back to the van and a minute later security and our DOM were there and he was instantly suspended for leaving the van unsecure. Now i know he was an idiot, he knows he was an idiot, anyone got any experience of this sort of thing. whats the likely outcome

did he leave the keys in? was there mail in the back? if the dom and i b were that close i would assume they had already have marked this individuals card. get the area rep involved asap if he/she is in the union, as if its a mails integrity case the punishment can be severe.

Was he parked in the yard if so he don't have to worry

If he was only 5m away and the van was in plain sight i would question whether the mail integrity was ever compromised.
As long as the keys were not in the van there is little difference between that and leaving a trolley at a gate while you deliver the mail which is according to Royal Mail...perfectly acceptable again as long as it is in plain sight..
Specials may be an issue though...those should never be left unattended.

im sorry mate but it dont sound right. leaving the door open and being 15 feet away from it for only say 30 seconds. now if he was gone for a good couple mins with the doors wide open then yeah what a pratt

If the dom and others were watching then maybe he was a serial offender or Joe public spragged that he does this outside their house most days?
