Collections and PDAs...

Hey all. Did a collection today and did the usual scanning into the pda. one problem though. the comms wouldnt connect and send the items. i tried and tried and tried but no luck. so logged off pda and it said preparing to send events. told manager he said dont worry. only thing was the battery was dying and i dunno how long it will last before it runs out. we have to leave the pda in the van after evening collections as office is closed. but the charging cradles dont work without engine switched on. does the pda remember events even if it switches off? so once u charge it and turn it on again it will resume? told manager anyway to be on safe side was by text message to so ive got proof he knows. cover my arse.

yeah to be fair about 6 in our office are total rubbish. do u know if they save if the battery runs out? i mean generally the manager i told is sound. i always txt him to let him know that way ive got evidence of replies. it will be ok im sure but id rather play it safe.

Was talking to an ex postie that works at the PDA returns company , he was saying RM are not keeping to the service schedules and therefore the PDA's are failing. As for scanning , its tools for the job if RM give you duff equipment then thats RMs problem not yours.

I would imagine they would loose all data if no battery is connected overnight. Once the battery gets below a certain % the PDAs will automatically switch the comms off. Some of the PDA batteries you're lucky if you get 5 mins out of them!

PDA's do not lose data if the battery is removed, even if events are unsent, there is a small Lith-ion battery to maintain the memory.

If you have to leave the PDA in the van overnight, take the battery out, that will save it completely discharging, I have to do this to stop it dying on me the following day.

When it's in the van cradle, make sure the red LED comes on, if it doesn't it's not charging, sometimes the elastic strap can stop it connecting properly.

the current PDA's are woeful.

you'll be ok, the events will save and send once they re-connect, probably when they are back in DO cradle.

you only have to see any other similar handheld used by any other home delivery firms to see how dated ours are

When you think an Android phone can do everything a PDA does, and is nowhere near the weight of a brick, you have to wonder where RM got those from, probably the eighties.

Your DOM is an idiot, if all the other remedies don't work then the total reboot is the only way to fix it, I know because I've done it a lot when my PDA has frozen.

There's a small reset button under the battery, it's the only way to reset the PDA properly
