Redundancy due to revision???

Post by damo6662009 »

Hi everyone, i was just wondering if there are many postal workers that have been made redundant due to the revision? I have been with royal mail for 2 years and 1 month on a 30 hour fixed term contract, i currently have a mortgage to pay for and im really worried about being made redundant. I do loads of overtime for the office etc. If anyone could shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated :Very Happy :Very Happy :Very Happy

Hey,

Im worried about loosing my job as well due to the restructure! im on a 3 month contract which runs out in a month, so far im enjoying the job and everyone has praised me for how well im doing. Because im the last one in ill be the first one to go though and after speaking to my managers they cant tell me if ill get my contract extended or not and its looking a bit grim.

I just wish i knew one way or the other, for now im job searching as a backup!

Haven't heard of any delivery staff being made redundant due to the revision, as a cost cutting exercise it fails, one office I know of had to employ more to cope after the revision because of the amount of packets you need to deliver.

I'm at an office that is to loose between 40 and 60 after revision. Apparently they cannot make redundancies due to a union arrangement BUT they can offer a replacement job within an hour's commute ! , no good for me as i also do the school run with my two girls.... so redundant by another name

Ive been worried about this aswell, ive been on a 3 month temp contract for about 7 or 8 months now and there havent been any new starters at my office, apparantly I was the first new starter for a long time aswell so the staff turnover here is low as hell.

Anyway we are due our revision in 2013 sometime and Im worried I'll be losing my job especially since Ive been hearing about jobs going after revisions in some offices.

Once your office goes through the revision your are going to need more staff there, not less. I wouldnt be overly concerned.

In most offices though the turnover of staff is high enough not to necessitate redundancies.

Particularly if you're a part-timer looking at an EVR in your near-future. They take the amount of overtime into account when figuring out your lump sum payment. I reduced my contract by four hours right after a November-Christmas stretch and it made a huge difference.

Page 8 of the Business Transformation Agreement, the agreement which is causing the current changes in Delivery methods etc has this passage:
In addition to the job security commitments contained in the MTSF Agreement - Royal Mail and CWU confirm that the overarching objective is to deliver the transformation without recourse to compulsory redundancies.
and
The key to the above commitment is for both parties to make every effort to ensure that there are no unresolved surpluses. Of primary importance will be to continue with the professional approach to long-term resource planning, utilising normal employee turnover and where necessary early voluntary retirement and voluntary redundancy (EVR/VR).
EVR - Early Voluntary Retirement
VR - Voluntary Redundancy

To be fair to Royal Mail they have not made anyone Compulsory Redundant in the current era, except for a few management grades.

Everyone in a permanent post is likely to stay in it before, after and during a revision.

If Royal Mail do make anyone in CWU representation grade compulsory redundant, the Union has always said they will fight it.

For Temporary Contracts, of defined terms contracts, then its a little less secure in the long term as they can cancel your employment as long as they follow the contract, but that has always been an option for them. In the short term, and from recent experience they are likely to need you to help sort out the revision anyway.

I was always dubious about those little pearls, why not say "There will be NO redundancies" and just how do you make every effort to ensure there are no unresolved surpluses - you may have 40 surplus staff and local vacancies to account for 20/25/30 ???????????????? We know RMs resolution to the problem, sack 'em for the least transgression and push 'em out the door if they're sick.
