gaining qualifications

hi guys,
i seem to remember on my induction being told that royal mail offers opportunities to do things like engineering (MC machines) and the such. Anyone know how to go about this, if possible... i would really like to gain a qualification or two but dont have the finances to go to college for it.

The induction person was talking of the way it was many years years ago, when RM had a change of policy regarding the necessary entry/basic qualifications for this line of work. In thier corporate wisdom they decided that anyone could apply for vacancies, and subject to passing the interview would then be sent to college for three years on day release, but the problem was that most didn't make it past the third week of the C&G training ("too much maffs, innit") and soon requested a return to the world of postie-ing and so wasting RM's money.

Then after the bad accident in the North East where someone badly burnt his hand in an electrical cabinet, and the subsequent highlighting of the issues (in this case) of no/inadequate formal qualifications in electrical work, that type of recruitment scheme is over.
The MC closure programme doesn't help either, as there's unlikely to be vacancies for some years anyway.
