24 hour contract

i recently started a 24 hour contract [9:30 am until 14:15] 5 days a week - but the walk i have been given is 4 hours plus and to get there and back is the best part of an hour...and from tomorrow i also have to sort the mail for this walk - i have been given no protective clothing,no photo ID and i feel kind of invisible - last week i delivered my last latter at 15:30 - after starting delivering at 11 am ! ... it seems that once i'm out of the door nobody cares what time i finish - i took the job because it fitted in around kids / looking after my father and a small mail order business i have - after 1 week i am sick of it !!
i only wanted the hours i have been given - this is why i applied initially !

24 hour contract, whats next a zero hour

have you spoken to the office rep

to throw your duty off now is unexceptable as it would exceed your contracted hours
have a quiet word with the rep first, then the manager and explain the situation

we all realised this would happen, putting more work on staff, then short contracts so you have the macdonalds effect of the revolving door situation on recruiting staff,

how do you get to your first delivery point and back to the office as you mention an hour

well i would have to wait for a van to take me out - and then get a bus back - which would be a pain - i am actually now using my own vehicle which is balmy i know !
i want the job - but as i said - 24 hours - which is the contract i signed

No one can force you to work overtime , you should tell your manager you are only working your contracted hours and any work you cannot manage is his problem

That's 2 people that have come on here complaining that they're being made to work over thier time without any extra pay.............maybe what we need is a simple form drawn up explaining to all employees what is expected of them and what RM is to do in return.

cheers for the advice and comments - i have been told nothing about breaks - the manager interviewed me and since then [ a month or 2 ago ] i haven't spoken to him...well as i said - it has only been my first week but it has stressed me - trying to get 6 or 7 hours work into 4 and 3/4 hours - it's a painful equation !
I am up North btw !
i have been offered the extra pay - but i don't want it / or the extra hours - the 24 hour week seemed ideal and fitted in with my other commitments perfectly,i am truly dissapointed - worked for the mail many years ago and have fond memories of it - seems a rather different place now

If you only want to work your contracted hours.....then only work your contracted hours.
Explain this to your manager first thing in the morning preferably in the presence of your rep, or any witness.
Before you leave the building explain to your manager that you believe the workload excessive and you do not believe you will be able to complete the delivery within your contracted hours.
Ask him/her what they want you to do.
They may suggest you leave a section of the walk. Try to gauge whether you will be able to complete what is left. Difficult I know.
They may suggest you take it all out and bring back what you can't complete. You need a witness for this so they can't start accusing you of wilful delay.
Don't get involved in discussions about streaming (only take 1st class etc)
Stay calm, Stay polite. Try and appear helpful and accommodating and don't take any s**t.

thanks for the advice clash man - will do exactly as you said and report back....my start time is 09:30 am - my mail is supposed to be sorted and ready to deliver - so far it hasn't been - not sure why i am a 4 hour plus walk when i am only on 4 and 3/4 days - i find it baffling !

i did the wrong thing and just never showed up - so i guess that's it for me now

So Royal Mail can offer you reduced benefits and just pay out any extra via overtime. It is a far more cost effective solution for them.

(When you go on holiday, for example, you will only get your standard 24 hours although this does not reflect anywhere near what you have done).

Its a con, but a clever one.
